Much research and work is involved in preparing
for a college’s milestone anniversary. Mt. San
Jacinto College is celebrating its 50th in

2012-2013 and a dedicated group of students
and faculty have been hard at work telling the
five decades of the MSJC story.

Faculty members Tom Merritt, Jerome Billins and
Don Smith are working with students to create a
documentary about MSJC.

The course brought together students from
several disciplines: history, English, multimedia
and more.

The students began in the summer poring through
old newspaper clippings and yearbooks to
research the college’s past and find out more
about the important people who started MSJC.
They interviewed some of the early faculty
members and students. They culled through
photo archives and unearthed stories that will
become gems in this documentary.

These students used social networking tools to
reach out to alumni and past employees. The
Facebook page and blog also keeps followers
apprised of the interesting adventures this project
has created for them.

This course will not only result in a historical
documentary for the college, but the students are
learning skills that will help them in future careers.

Listen to what some of the students have to say:

The best part of the project has been getting a
chance to use our skills that we’ve developing
throughout our time here at the college with a real
0:01:18.033,0:01:26.033
world project. And it’s been cool working with
other students to produce this real life
documentary.

Being a history student, this project has been
very exciting because I get to work with some of
the top students in the other disciplines. We have

our multimedia guys and our writers and it’s been
a lot of fun to work with everybody on this
project together.

My favorite part about this project working on this
project is being able to show my appreciation for
this school and what it has given me the
0:01:47.000,0:01:51.066
knowledge to be able to work on a film and
actually be able to apply it to a real world
experience in a real world environment and not
only have I had to overcome different challenges
because I’m working on a real world project I
have learned so much from working with all
0:01:59.033,0:02:01.000
these wonderful people.

The incredible teamwork from the students,
faculty and others who participated in the
documentary is a testament to the positive
influence MSJC has had and continues to have
on our community. Be sure to watch for the
documentary. It will premiere at the

MSJC Foundation’s 50th anniversary gala on
February 9, 2013.
