Voiceover (Female): Snugs a, I suppose semi-rural school, that's how we like to think about
it. But it's actually only 20 minutes from the centre of Hobart. We've got three hundred
and eighty seven students, forty five staff members and a very, very supportive parent
community. We have a wide range of sustainability initiatives here, from chickens, where we,
you know, have our own egg supply and we have composting right through to the Stephanie
Alexander Kitchen Garden Program which is seed to plate.
Voiceover (Young Female): There's a pizza oven at our school as well. We grow our own
produce and we cook it and we eat it. Voiceover (Female): The National Solar Schools
Program was one of those important initiatives, so we were able to put in solar panels and
we were able to put in some measuring tools to see just exactly how effective they were.
The students were then able to measure the impact of that change and that's been thorough
a digital format where they can see what we have used in a day in power and this is what
our solar panels have generated back for us. Voiceover (Young Male): This is the power
inverter; right now we are generating 1.4 kilowatts, because it is sunny day today.
Voiceover (Female): We were able to put in sensors for our lighting and replace some
of the lighting that was very energy inefficient, with something that actually was efficient.
Voiceover (Young Male 2): Last year we tested a few types of light globes. We found by far
the most efficient was an LED light. Voiceover (Female): We've got audit tools
where students can assess what they're doing in their home to actually reduce their footprint.
Voiceover (Female 2): We use the kits to test various electrical appliances within our school,
and it was a fantastic way of building those relationships and making those learning connections
between home and school. Voiceover (Female): And our community value
means that you are a local community person, you work in a local community, you work in
a national and state community and you also work in a global community. So we are teaching
students about the importance of being global citizens we believe through the initiatives
we run here.
