I'm Briar Ferguson and I'm a portfolio manager at NZDMO which is part of the Treasury.
When I first came into Treasury I thought it was going to be quite academic. The people there
are actually really normal and really great to work with. Varied interests and different backgrounds.
It's a really dynamic place to work and it's exciting. And you're doing new things every day.
We go from being able to trade FX to looking after the interest rates
to looking after our debt portfolio, our asset portfolio. I can do a range of things that
I wouldn't be able to do in the private sector. I left Tauranga to come down to Wellington
to study. I loved the city from the moment that I came and explored. Wellington has that
energy. It has that small city feel but it offers so much. I think Wellington punches
above its weight. You go overseas, you can't get what Wellington has in terms of location,
by the sea, the restaurants, the cafes, that chilled-out vibe. Treasury offers the whole
package. It offers you the academic or professional challenge as well as offering you time to
be with your family and have time outside of work. The advice that we put forward has
a lasting impact and the decisions that come from that advice or the operations that we
do, it has a big flow-on effect through the economy.
