You know, it's a good thing that the rooster you control in Ghost Chicken is deceased,
otherwise the sound effects associated with the neck stretching might be a little more
grotesque. This is a game made to cash in on Halloween around the corner however, so
it might not have been too out of place. Regardless, even though you're a ghost chicken, you still
have hunger, so it's time to stretch out underground, feasting on all the corn and bugs you can
find.
The goal of each level is to collect all the corn. Your chicken stands on the surface,
and with the drag of a finger, you stretch his neck into all the nooks and crannies available.
They were possibly left there by gophers. Insects and spiders will travel across the
screen, and while they can be eaten for bonus points, if they hit any part of your stretched
neck, you take damage. Lose all your lives and its game over. One of the more satisfying
aspects of this game is the snapping back of the neck either when you let go or get
hit, as the neck careens through all the caverns back to the top of the screen.
The music adds a haunting tone which is undercut a little by the eagerness of the chicken every
time he eats a piece of corn. Visually everything is represented simply, but effectively. The
game contains the same levels in each difficulty setting but the timer and frequency of enemies
changes to make things more difficult.
Ghost Chicken is an original concept that is pulled off with more success than the head
of the chicken starring in it. If you have an appetite for corn, or enjoy the ghoulish
stretching of chicken collars, this game will provide amusement for a few levels until the
gameplay starts to wear a bit thin.
