I'm Katie Adams, a registered dietitian, with Decathlon Club, a part of Western Athletic
Clubs. To eat out healthfully in restaurants, there are a few main key words to look for.
Words such as breaded, fried, and crusted, are red flags for high calorie, high fat foods.
Also, beware of dishes that come covered in sauces. Cream sauces, wine sauces, lemon butter
sauces, are all loaded with fat. Be sure to ask for your sauces on the side. That way,
you can decide, how much of them you add. Share an entree with someone, and each get
a side salad. That way, you can still get all the flavor you want, but cut back on the
amount of calories and fat, or ask for a to go box, and put about half of your entree
in that box, before you even take a bite. That way, you won't be tempted to pick at
the meal, as you sit there chatting, and you get an additional meal out of it. Skip dessert,
or if you really want to have it, get one dessert for the entire table, to share. A
few bites are all you need, to satisfy your sweet tooth. Another thing you can do, is
turn to the internet. Most restaurants today, have their menu available online, and some
even provide nutritional information. That way, you can look at the menu before you go,
and you can decide what you're willing to get. In general, it is best to avoid fast
food restaurants. Anything with a drive through, means that their menus are usually high in
fat and calories. Most restaurants also offer side salads or fruit. Make sure you get those,
if you're going to have something higher fat, like a hamburger or French fries. I'm Katie
Adams, a registered dietitian with Decathlon Club, part of Western Athletic Clubs, and
that is how you can eat out healthfully.
