Hey how's it going I'm Tim Holtz and today we are
here to talk about Configurations
I'm going to show you how cool these little boxes
are all the different things that you
can create with them really show you how to put one together
it's easier than you think
alright so I'm going to start off by talking about
Configurations and really what they are
they are
customizable shadow boxes they come in four different sizes four different
styles
there's a small
square there's a longer rectangle one and then there
is
a small rectangular one and a larger rectangular one and
when you get them
they basically have a lid that comes off this is
a framed lid
they have a removable piece of acetate you can see that in there and when you
purchase it there's going to be a protective film on one side of the
acetate so just go ahead and remove this
I did this so you can decide whether you
want the
acetate window in your shadow box or not sometimes you have
something dimension
al that will actually
stick out too far you don't want that
window in there
then you have these inside now the inside of
course is all divided by
smaller boxes
that's a cool thing and these are complete
boxes they have
all the sides and of course a back to to them
so the idea behind this is that you can
reconfigure
your shadow boxes depending on what
elements you have to put inside and when
you purchase these
you'll see that on the back it does give you some suggested layouts for that
Configuration it doesn't mean you have to follow
that but sometimes people look at all these
pieces
if you're not good at those little slider games you may not know
how else to reconfigure these and you can
see that there's all different styles
for this so
I just want to take you through and show you some
tips on using Configurations first of
all in all four boxes
of Configurations all of the individual
boxes are exactly the same
size
which means if you have multiple boxes and let's
say for example you don't like
the square you like more of the smaller pieces
well the smaller pieces
basically
if you look here
to of it the skinny rectangles equal the
same size as the big squares of course
if you start saving these pieces up you
may do an entire Configuration of
just big squares or just little rectangles in
other words all these pieces
are interchangeable throughout the four boxes so
you definitely want to hold on to these especially if you move parts around and
what I mean by that is
although you have all these pieces and like I said you can
reconfigure this
you can slide these around you can do whatever it is you want
sometimes you may decide
that you want to create a large area of your shadow box maybe
something for
example right in the center
that you have something to tall maybe it's
a bottle or statue or figurine or
something
so you may want to remove these
entirely from the box and not even use it
and create a larger space for your shadow
box that's the cool thing about
Configurations is that you can reconfigure
your design
Here are some seasonal shadow boxes that I did
for Halloween and for Christmas and you
can see on this one I used the long
rectangular Configuration and I like this one because I can design either
horizontal or I can design a vertical so I really like
this particular size
so on the Halloween one for example I wanted to put in a tall skeleton and a
bottle so all I did was of course go
into my Configurations like I said and
decide that I'm going to remove this section out
entirely that of course that creates that
large area that you need and save these
boxes for other things
if you don't want to save them for other Configurations maybe you're only going to
make
one
you can still use these boxes to create
your own little collage box I mean you could
put little elements inside you could put beads on the bottom for little feet
you could uses for
to put a journal inside they're just cool boxes I like
that they're really strong now
Configurations are also made out of paperboard so you can
even here that
this is not paper mache this is a really durable
paperboard so it will handle the weight of
the elements that you can put
inside these boxes
this one for Christmas I did a
really cool vintage bottle brush tree
and I'll kind of tip it on the side so you can see that the tree
comes out past the box again that's what
I was saying before
that sometimes you don't want to have that
acetate window in there if you're going to have elements that stick out
past
the end some other things I want to show of course when we talk about embellishing
and I'll talk a little bit more about it at the end
is that you can collect all sorts of
different elements
to put in these boxes that's what makes Configurations so unique
is that
you customize it to whatever you want to put in the box
the cool thing about these being paperboard
boxes you can cover just about anything
you can use
fabric or decorative tapes of course you can use inks, paints
and scrapbook paper to do that as well so I just want to
take you through and give
you some tips on
covering this first of all the the lid the lid
of course detaches itself but more
importantly the lid goes all the way to the back of the box so
when you're covering this it is important that you do cover the lid you
want to cover the sides
and of course around this top part the inside of the lid
and the outside edge of the box are not going to be seen because remember if
you're going to
put this right on top that's going to cover that up so that's
really the first
thing is don't cover
this inside edge or the outer edge of the inside box I should
say you don't want
to cover that
so we want to worry about the lid itself
and of course the back
of the box the back of the box being that flat part
that you can do so
it does involve some measuring so of course
you want to get your ruler and go in and
just measure some of the
the elements you can measure obviously the width the length of whatever it is
you do and we're going to also talk
about covering the boxes
now when we go to cover the boxes I'm going to give you
some tips on this and I'll talk about the
inside boxes themselves a little bit
later so
for now just just gone in and
measured this
and cut the paper and I'm going to use my Lost and Found
paper I just like
working with that so
I've got
the lid here let's just talk about that
and I've got some pieces of paper this is just paper that
I have already cut for the sides of this and
I have to say that I am you know I don't
do a lot of measuring I'll just
cut the width of the strip because I
can always shorten it this way because
remember the whole outer part of this is going to be
same width so I just go
in and just cut my paper all into strips and then I can trim off
whatever I don't need and use my
leftovers for that
so the glue that I like to use I love working with Multimedium
this is from Ranger this is Claudine Hellmuth Studio
Multimedium
I like to work with matte
and I use it in a jar simply because
I can brush it on you're just going to take
paintbrush
go ahead and dip that in
Claudine also has these really nice brushes
they're nice wide brushes too
so I just go in with my Multimedium
and I slap this around do you need to use
Multimedium? no you can use whatever
adhesive you want if you want to use
double stick tape you can do that if you
want to try working with the glue stick
you can do that
glossy accents you can do that but you're going to go through a lot of
Glossy Accents
the reason I like Multimedium is you can
see how easy it is to
spread on there
also when I go to lay
my paper down
it will go ahead and
flatten and smoothly adhere that paper
if you try to use things like Mod Podge I think that has
too much moisture in there and your paper will
start to ripple on the edge
so that's why I like to use that
I've gone ahead and lined up my paper to
the back of the box
because this front part kinda arches around and we're going to cover that
with something completely different so
once I've glued that on like I said I have that little excess piece
I'll just flip that over
go in with my scissors and trim it off like I said
I'm not
much of a perfectionist when it comes to that because I'm still going to be doing
some
distressing inking that sort of thing
and then you just going to go
around just take your Mltimedium
brush that on
and you can see the Multimedium when it's on I'll see if the camera
picks it up it kinda has a little shimmer when it's
wet
but I like to work with matte because
when it dries you can't see it at all so if
you're a sloppy gluer like I am you
really don't have to worry about that
and I just lay on my next strip
again smooth it out
flip it over
and cut it on if you're wondering what
you do with these extra pieces well you
know eventually you can have a lot of
little pieces you could do an entire box
like a patch-work that'd be pretty cool as well so
you're just going to continue going around the
edge gluing that once you have
this part done and we'll talk about just press this part down so it can
dry
we talk about this part being adhered with paper
we can go in and we can go ahead and
cover-up this outer edge now you can do little strips of paper
you can do ribbon you can do I don't know pretty much anything that you want
to use
what I like to use for the outer edge of this is of course
Tissue Tape
so I'm gonna get my Tissue Tape get that started
get that right on the edge here
I love the stuff I like the fact that it's
so thin and sheer so
I'm just going to take this
put it right along the edge here now
that little bit off
I like to line up my Tissue Tape on the
inside part I'm not too concerned about
wrapping it around on the inside
but I do want to wrap it around the outside because
remember we still have
that slight gap between
at the top of the box and the paper
so you're just going to lay your Tissue Tape
all the way down right along there and just rip that off because again it's just tissue
paper
there you go and then I can just fold this around
and just use my hands just to work that
and check that out
how simple is that
nice professional look gets that all covered up
and that's what I would just do all the way around the frame of
the lid
