What are Compassionate Allowances in the Social Security Disability System?
Hi I'm Marc Whitehead, a Board Certified Social Security Disability Attorney.
Some of the most common Social Security questions I get are
are about Compassionate Allowances.
Client want to know, what they are, how they work and what disabilities qualify as compassionate allowance conditions.
Their desire to know is completely understandable
understandable because compassionate allowance cases are processed much more quickly
then regular Social Security Disability claims.
That means you get your benefits a lot faster.
The most basic way to describe compassionate allowance conditions
are that they are impairments that are clearly covered as disabilities without
without the Social security system needing a lot of medical documentation.
that can take a long time to get.
Rather then make these severally disabled people wait for their benefits
the compassionate allowance process allows them to get their approval fast.
Every year about 150,000 people have their claims processed as rush jobs through either
the compassionate allowance or the quick disability determinations process, which is very similar
there is no one way that social security decides what constitutes a compassionate allowance condition.
They can bare conditions against their definition of disability to see if they fit,
listen to advice from experts in the medical and scientific field
and use research from the National Institutes of Health
and they pay attention to what social security disability workers say
and utilize public information from outreach hearings.
If a condition seems to fit the established criteria or be causing significant problems.
The SSA will then add it to their list of compassionate allowance conditions.
As of December 6, 2012 there were over 200 conditions on that list.
People who want to take a look at the full list of compassionate allowance conditions
can look at our website. The newest additions to the list include:
adult non hodgkin's lymphoma, Adult onset huntington disease, sinonasal cancer and many others
