It's very important to think about what happens on day one
of any given class. If you don't establish norms
they get established for themselves. So it's important to think about on the
first day who
does the talking. If the faculty member is the only one doing the talking,
and you come back on the second week and are surprised that no one's contributing
verbally to
your discussions, it may be because unwittingly
you said a norm on day one that it's
faculty members who do talking and not students.
So on the very first day of class, it's really important that you give students an
opportunity
to join in on the conversation. For introverted students that might feel
daunting,
but if you use a developmental approach
it's something that they can certainly do with some support.
