(Ben) My name’s Ben. I have been at Capital One for thirteen years,
and I’m responsible for our service member affairs. I came to
Capital One in 1999. Capital One did then, and has always had a
good relationship with the military community.
(Steven) When I was getting out of the military I was stationed in DC,
at Andrews Air Force Base, and came across Capital One at a
military hiring conference. The interview style that they employed
was intriguing, and the interviewer was young and energetic, and
the company just seemed like a place that I wanted to be a part of.
(Sally) One of the things that makes Capital One such a different
company is our values. Some of our best associates come to us
with a military background because there they certainly have had
to learn how to be disciplined and work with a team.
(Ben) Team work is a key to success here at Capital One, and you
really do develop a camaraderie with the people you work with. Now
look, I don’t think you will ever find the same level of camaraderie
that you do in the military, I’m not sure that I will find that in my
lifetime. But when you are faced with challenging situations, when
you are relying on the skills and the knowledge of one another,
when you are really putting your trust in one another, those are
the recipes for that camaraderie, and I never thought I would find
it the same way I have in the military, but I’ve really come close,
and that’s been a lot of fun.
(Steven) The company values, above all else, diversity. And you can
take that word in almost every direction you want to take it, like
diversity of thought, diversity of background, of education. They
greatly valued what I was able to bring as a former Air Force officer,
and particularly the leadership qualities that anybody that’s been an
officer for ten years in any branch of service would have, as well as
my life experiences, as well as my undgrad engineering degree and
my MBA. So for both of us it was a nice marriage of abilities and education.
(Ben) What we’re really looking for is the experience, the leadership,
and really, the creative problem solving that is developed in the military
and really put to work here at Capital One as well. That has been a
big part of my success here.
