this week on Dirt Every Day we're taking a fourteen hundred dollar pickup truck and
building it for cheap truck challenge
the athlete the
the
you're kidding you have a job in like a
fast food restaurant but you want to get into four wheeling you're probably gonna
figure out pretty quickly
at four wheeling is not G
the on cheap army fingerprint frisbees pretty cheap
all you need is a frisbee and somebody hedged for you throaty
old hi
again thank you I'm here long
so
monitors parts that you need to go four-wheeling are not cheap
so what he did well we came up a cheap truck challenge to address that problem
we want to showcase how to build vehicles that
you might buy pretty inexpensively say for two thousand dollars or less
and then you can modify and see what you can do modify them bruner 2000 on
the first thing we're gonna do though really get this vehicle red take it out
and go four-wheeling
that's something that I don't think a lot of people understand once you take a
four wheel you can't really figure out what does this thing to do
it might be fun may also figure out that the tires are John
there's not enough suspension more ground clearance need the bumper maybe
it needs a winch
those are all the things that you're gonna figure out once you start driving
in
so might keep track for 2014
is a twenty year old chevy s-10 but I was looking for cheap truck
I wanted a small vehicle last year I gotta Landcruiser
from Toyota this year I wanted a domestic truck but I but
a small mini truck vehicle truck to start with and I found this ninety-three
chevy s-10 but I wanted to do with this truck was star was something small
light and see what I can do to make it better operan a truck like this
with almost a hundred and eighty two hundred ninety thousand miles
twenty-years-old it seen some abuse over the years
this was actually some sort of government truck there's like a
random sticker on the door had been painted over a kid I got it from here
done a few things to
upgraded but for the most part it's pretty much a stock truck
what I wanna do is kinda see what we can do on a budget
but before we even touch any of that stuff really taken off road
what we know what it can do in stock form then we can figure out what we're
going to do it upgraded
make it better
inside a lot of his or her charts there's a sticker and if you look at the
number on that sticker on the internet you can tell you all types of things
about the truck by what the paint code is what the
axle ratios are and if it has a limited slip differential
now this truck the stickers long gone so what I'm gonna have to do is drive it
through this it'll be not
and see if the tire spin or Vicki driving in pushes structure that'll tell
me whether or not it has minutes
even though we're not making it up the trail
both tires are spinning so it feels like the truck is trying to get some traction
the tires are probably aired up the street pressure
and they're almost bald and also know we can do better track to all these things
means the truck doesn't wanna climb
wanna put in four wheel drive and see if that helps to get up otherwise not a
backup in louisiana run at it the
four-wheel-drive gotta submit a lot of fun but what we're rolling and we really
twisted up
got this higher off the ground it was spinning and this tire with not whether
the limited slip
is not working right or there's no limits have been a struggle
basically we can depend on any sort a limited slip in the back end
the front and has no limits that either because I was really an option
so all we have is four wheel drive which with open differentials which we think
we have
means we really only have two wheel drive one that will drive in the rear
one wheel drive in the front but that's better than nothing at all
so this is a 93 has 10
and 93 was the last year the kinda square body as tens in ninety four they
came out with a much more
an aerodynamic cooler looking truck these very muddy tracks
definitely don't have because look at all the S stands but
but actually benefit because when you're looking for a cheap truck when you buy
them
uglier version of that vehicle its often going to be cheaper
mean if this thing was say per bowler some random
color that most people don't like you probably get it as a at a better deal
now home what we do have under this truck though
is a fuel injected 4.3 liter v6 at a good engine
and behind it is a 700r4 a lot of people don't like the 700r4
it's a four-speed automatic has an overdrive what's really good about it is
it has a very low
first-year lower than a lot of GM automatic transmissions
so it helps that of Roman you can in the rock crawler get up some obstacles
I another thing about this track is it has Toho
whenever you're buying a former for its always good to try and find one that
already has two hooks
I don't know how many times I didn't figure it out as a kid but if you
go with another vehicle and a tow strap oftentimes you're not walking home
otherwise
you're walking home in the rain because your truck stuck in mud somewhere
for a ditch underneath these trucks torsion bar
his front suspension independent front suspension is the torsion bars the
spring
and not a lot I will travel at a desire for surly trucks but
that should be our aid for what we want to do on a solid axle usually a better
option when you really doing some hardcore off roading but this was cheap
that's why we got it in rear it does have a solid axle the springs
under the rear axle to help deal with actual rap
and that the seven and a half inch rear axle I think the front is like a seven
and a quarter
we're gonna see if we can do a little hill climb over here in Seattle
we're gonna do is win but this thing in the lower range
bring down the first here and see if it will climb up this obstacle
now it's kinda steep got a lot of weight on the from the chart
not very much in the back our tires are bald we're going to see what I but
drawing this little problem
here's one of the first thing for finding this is our rear departure
angle:
notice how the rear bumpers hang out so far from the back tire
or trying to turn climb up the steep obstacle organ hung up on the rear
bumper so
maps one bedroom apt address too much rear overhang now and see if it'll
actually crawl up this thing
or perhaps the back it up southern style rock bands up
I want to ban
I'm really digging this little truck it's fun to drive it's got pretty good
power
good gearing it's great for running around town and got a bed that I can for
all types junkins but 13 brought out here in the dirt I've definitely found
some flaws
first of all tires these tires are worn out
and when I looked underneath there's not even a spare if I wanna punctured any of
these would've been a long walk home
the other thing is rear overhang that's a problem we're getting hung up to
trying to drive up hills and I'm already back the rear end into a stamp
dented the bumper I don't know what's going on in this rear axle
doesn't have a limited slip does not is it working
and I don't even know that I can afford to fix it I've already spent fourteen
hundred dollars buying it and I don't wanna spend more than two thousand
dollars fixing it up
so I'm kind of on a tight budget there the rear axle may have to come at a
later time
but I think for right now we're gonna head back into town and start rappin
Adam
did
room
the so before we start tearing in our lowest and truck
we had to go pick up some steel rather than a get halfway to the building
realize we don't have the material on the truck a sitting on jack stands we
came out here that local still yard accustomed to being in some flat plate
for a
bumpers may be some rock sliders an hour head back to the shop
the destructible jack stands the board
this year for cheap truck challenge Falcon tyres come on as our tire sponsor
now
this truck is a very big and I wanted a bigger tire for it but it when it too
large so ended up with a set up
3312 5015 Falcon while P
there all-terrain tire document is actually coming out with a new
mud terrain tire but they don't have a missed size yet some gonna run this hall
tree which is probably
perfect for this truck because to see our road days but also season trailed
and a good all-around tire
his tires have some big boys in here to help offer attraction
but are not so aggressively to be loud and I'm not just another
Road one problem we're seeing is that this tire
is much larger than those little 28-inch
one out fired for having trucks now showing up at your suspension as well
these tires Ron about two hundred and seventy-five dollars each
I also found a sedative used Ford said on wheels
have come this do bolt pattern this is a test and have a fun people pattern
I found those used for about a hundred dollars so
roughly two hundred dollars per tire and wheel so we gotta watch for much in all
the stuff we offer just spent some money at the Steel Yard
I think what I need to do right now is write down how much we spent on
everything so far
and figure out what we're going to do to get the suspension if this thing
get a little bit taller to be bigger fired we span
roughly a thousand dollars on tires and wheels
we spent eighty five dollars on some tubing and simply know what I'm trying
to do is keep the entire build
under 2014 dollars
and were already under that a fourteen hundred dollar purchase so we're doing
pretty good
on the purchase now it's ruined on modifications we wanna fifties 33
install tires under here
I looked online and I came across a suspension kit that is
five hundred dollars so now we're at 1585 dollars
over budget let me show you the suspension I got
so we have this little kid from rough country this is a two and a half inch
lift
somehow we're gonna have to find another inch and a half to two inches and
clearance to fit those 33 but the sake but under budget
and I think we can do some trimming on the body to get those bigger tires under
on
your
first thing in the new on the truck is a need to remove the cap
because we can this not really important for the project
now over gonna do here's we're gonna remove these
shackles on the rear springs and Marty remove the Shockers
a replacement these longer shock no
shocker now the trucking on jack stands
the rear tires are on and so as we remove these bolts on the rear shackle
the your suspension or group alum
Google
the rear love this truck is really pretty simple to longer shackled
longer shocks and we're back in business sum up the money is spent on its way far
back here
you have to just that this one doesn't now the front is a little bit more
complicated has a new operator arm
as a bracket to drop the differential or not to cut the differential
and we have new shocks for upfront with new torsion bar keys
when you're doing the front suspension pollens from
personal because new shock on and we'll get back to work
well
%uh
for
%uh
po-boy you that our players
her already rubbing the tires and its not even compressing the suspension
so we're going to have to the very least remove this flare
and then we managed to get in here and start trimming body panel
chrome you look at the distance from the shock but still showing
was about four and a half to five inches shocks am showing the figure the tires
gonna come up
that bar I'm we may be able to get away with that rate here
so I mean I have to trim the top I think we're definitely gonna have to trim
someone this or at the very least get this play Rock
and see how much these we have been between we might get lucky in the rear
the front because the tires turn I think we're definitely coming home
after we remove the software you can see there's an into
gap between the wheel well opening and the tire
and as the suspension compresses the tires actually gonna move up
and backwards to the shack on the back or swing that some pretty sure we're not
going to trim
anything on the promise the tire is definitely a swing back into this
but if we want to trim some %uh that of we may even trim it all the way up to
here
get a lot more departure angle: the rear bumper on RS 10 sticks out past the
tailgate a good seven inches
which is great if you're in a fender bender
not so great we are on the trail because every inch that hangs out over the back
of a truck
as an institution get hung up on wanna do
from the pull the rear bumper offer the truck is actually bolt onto the frame
full license plate of a little lights off so we can reuse all that many will
mount
rate the tailgate
a
then I'm gonna see how close we can get to
the back in the truck to maybe put just the peace and to be in there is a bumper
we may even go so far as to cut the back in the truck
and section it to shorten up the whole back and so that
if this is our departure angle: now he can bring it up to here if we lose the
bumper
and if we bring the back of the truck up even further bring even more departure
angle:
all that allows us when we're doing that hill climb in the bottom drops in
are becoming of an obstacle you not get caught up on this and you can go to a
little bit more often
do
to this I did I would bob the back to the s10
what I want to do is basically cut a whole section on the back to the
bed of some taking about 6
38 inches of the back here and I'm trying to get it so that there's a point
where
everything from here forward and has the same body lines
king
and this is kinda cricket but we can still clean it up
animal cut another line right up here and roughly ten or twelve inches forward
and then we can put this piece back up there on that story line
and tack welded well all back together you know I actually shorten the bed of
the truck opened
and in in there's two body mount on the back
basically just some holes in the frame
there's nobody pushing the one we have to frame the same amount
in with his drill matching holes capital Baghdad
the bed that on friend meaning and uni
bigoted in all this departure angle: fact the only thing hanging out behind
the rear tire now is our shackle and thats narrower so it's not really that
too big a deal
oMG rhea definitely have to clean it up a little bit
our lines are not perfectly straight win come back through grind everything
we also have to put it to bumper up front I
finish our front suspension rock sliders know what to do
we'll see you on our next episode we take our little white truck
too cheap truck challenge
I'm do
on ok
