California Earthquake
We have a series of major
strike slip faults ones that
accomplish moving the pacific
ocean to the northwest
and North America to the southeast
the San Andreas the Sanjacinto
The Elsinore The Newport
Inglewood fault this earthquake happened
on the southern extension of the
Elsinore fault On the engineering side
on the human side one of the major features
has been damage to water conveyance
systems and that is actually one of our
predictions we ended up concluding
that water systems were one of the
most vulnerable, and seems to
really have played out in this
earthquake and we are now conducting
some further investigations to really
try to see where the problems were
and what could be done to mitigate
against future damage of that sort
because life in California without
our water conveyance systems would
be very difficult we don’t have nearly
enough local water to live that way
the canals were clearly a problem in
the imperial valley there is allot of
irrigation there is a big impact on
our agriculture in the area but it is
also the pipes carrying it down the
street into your house and the sewage
pipes next door to the water pipe
and one of the things we worry
about in a really big earthquake
is that if you break both of those
systems you have a level of contamination that the only solution is to lay new pipe
and that is going to impact our ability
to recover from an earthquake because
it might take many many months to
get our water back its likely that we
are going to see an impact not just
on this years crops but on future
years crops especially in northern
Mexico because the irrigation
systems have been damaged by the event
Well one of the biggest issues is water
that in itself we take this type of
event we take the water issues
we had here and we times it by
100 or mabe 1000 when we talk
about a catastrophic event working
with FEMA has been a great experience
for allot of us allot of us working in the
state a on a day to day basis we dont
get to work with FEMA as much as
we have been and so that experience
will pay off in dividends for future
disasters and I think that one of the
best things is like us they feel the
same common goal as making sure
that we help those jurisdictions out
in time of need so we really appreciate
the ability to work closely with FEMA
like we have been
As a result of the earthquake the imperial
irrigation district is the eligible
applicant and we are going to
provide engineers and inspectors
to go out and work with their
engineers and inspectors to identify
the shortfalls of the facility so there
is investigations going on to try to
determine what those damages are
the applicant has done ground based
radar to try to figure out exactly where
the damage has occurred
Because this is their peak season
I mean this is their time of year that
they have to deliver the most water
to the farmers it is also the hottest
part of the season
you got the general public that is
consuming water at a higher rate
they would be required to redirect
that water which would be very
time consuming and costly because
of the partnership we feel
that would be able to maximize
the funding to the irrigation districts
and one of the biggest successes to
date that has been one of them
