Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Today we're going to learn about long division.
In long division there are steps. The first of which is to divide. After you divide you
multiply. After you multiply you subtract. After you subtract you bring the number down.
When all those steps are through you restart the entire process and you start again with
divide. You'll have a new number to divide. So lets say you have a problem and the problem
is, we'll make it an easy 2 division problem. Start with the 2 and lets say you want to
divide it into 4, 324. K? My first step is going to be to divide into the 4. 2 fits into
the 4, 2....4...twice. That was me dividing. Then I multiply. Always remember when I multiply
I multiply the outside number times the top number. 2 x 2 = four. Then on my list I subtract.
When I subtract, I subtract 4 take away 4 and I get zero. After I subtract I go to my
list and then I bring down. Bringing down the 3 now I have a new number. Now in division
when you divide you never want to go over the number so 2 can fit into a 3 one time.
Can't go up because that would be a four. The two goes into 3 once. The one goes up
there, that's the dividing. Then I multiply. I'm only multiplying this digit times the
side number, times the two. so it's 1 x 2 and I'm putting it right underneath the 3
I brought down. There's my two. Then I'm going to subtract 3 take away 2. I get 1. Then I'm
going to bring down the next number that I'm dividing into. Bring down the 2 all the way
down put it next to the 1. My new number is 12. Now I'm going to repeat the process again
going back up to divide. When I divide I'm going to count by 2s until I get to 12. 2,
4, 6, 8, 10, 12 what I get is 6. 6 goes up on top, it goes right above the 2, see the
2 I brought down? 6 times 2 is 12 by multiplying. 12 goes under the other 12 and then I subtract
those both on the next step. 12 take away 12 is zero. I bring down the 4 which is my
new number, there's my four and now I divide again starting the process again. two can
fit into a 4 4 is divided by 2 2 times. So the 2 goes up on top. Now I multiply again
just this 2 digit. 2 x 2 which is 4. Four goes down here. Then I subtract again. four
take away four leaves me with noooo remainder. A remainder is just what you have left. That
my friends is your example on how to do long division.
