Today is january 9.
We slept two nights in Porto Alegre.
Now we will try to go to Pelotas, and then
Jaguarão, which is the city on the border...
And then from Jaguarão to...
... Treinta y Tres, which is Uruguay... And Montevideo.
There is a police station herel.
Today is our second day on the road hitchhiking.
Leo: Wanna say something, ***?
Leandro: Something, ***
Leo: Are you excited, hopeful today..?
Well, today we have arrived earlier, right... The weather looks nice for hitchhiking...
The place looks nice...
I think I will get my fouth ride...
Leo: While Leo only films it, right?
Leandro: Leo only films and makes signs.
The next times I hichhike,
if he doens't come along, I will make a doll with his face...
...and leave by the highway.
Leave it on the road hichhiking for me.
while I remain seated shooting some video.
So that's it, the exit of Porto Alegre... Heading to Uruguai.
Let's see if there is someone who wants some company today, for us.
It's almost two in the afternoon and we got a ride...
...after two hours waiting
Uhm... what's your name again?
Driver: Rogério.
Leo: Then Rogério picked us up.
We were thinking about going to Montevideo today...
... to take the boat and arrive at Buenos Aires.
And Rogério is going to... Rivera, right?
Rogério: Rivera.
To Rivera, which is also On the boarder of Uruguai.
But is to the west of Rio Grande do Sul.
So we are passing by the pampas gaúchos.
Rogério is used to always going to Rivera and always picks up people.
Rogério: if the person is presentable, I pick him up
Leo: and look, everybody keeps saying
that is impossible for two man hitchhike together.
We both did it.
and he said that he doesn't pick up woman.
Rogério: Yes... but it is easier to be
robbed by a woman than by a man.
The woman hitchhikes with the man and starts to "trovar" the driver...
And she says "Stop therei."
Then when you stop, somebody comes and rob you.
Then what will you do?
All the landscapes are like this.
Lots of plantation...
cattle, horse, sheep...
coffee plantation, wheat...
Rogério: This river is full.
Usually it is only 10 meters wide.
04:15pm
And we are at Rivera, on Uruguai.
We just crossed the border.
We will go in immigration to fill out the papers.
Leandro: La imigración,
where we just finished all the bureaucratic process
of leaving a country and entering another.
Leo: Now we did the documents to enter Uruguay.
We said that we were coming by bus.
Leandro: Though the signs clearly indicate that is a bald-faced lie.
Leo: Like in his face. I left the sign right on top of the counter,
while I said that was coming by bus.
Leo: But whatever right.
Leandro: It was fas .
Leo: It is because they shouldn't have the category
"hitchhike" there on their form..
Leandro: "Foi rápido e rasteiro como a torcida do cruzeiro."
Leo: Now we have to find out the city exit quickly.
So everyone told us to walk ahead
walk I don't know how many miles til get to the "Virgencita"...
... which is a saint that we should see on the top of the hill .
Then we went walking, walking, walking,
until a man stop for us and drive us to the customhouse.
It was a brazilian.
We got a ride with a truck fromt he customhouse in Rivera...
... to here at the entrance "Minas de Corrales".
It was a brazilian truck who picked us to here .
We went to this police station to ask for information ...
... and there was a woman who spoke portuguese,
they said we're crazy because we 're traveling from Minas Gerais.
At this moment Leandro is there talking to the drivers of those trucks,
I do not know if you can see him.
Leandro : Are you recording ? Leo : Uhun .
Leandro : I just got a ride, because I 'm awesome.
There are two truckers there: a Brazilian and Uruguayan .
They said that half an hour they should leave,
and if we want they can give us a ride.
Leo: So, done. You see? I'm going to retire.
I'll just bring a wheelchair with me
and I'll always take this guy with me.
I don't need anything else.
Leo : So ok, within half an hour if no one stops for us
we accept their a ride.
Meanwhile we keep hitchhiking here on the road trying to catch a car.
Leandro : Yeah, a ride on a car would not be a bad thing.
Leo : And then if a car stops we can already go, otherwise we go by truck.
Leo: It's 9:10 pm, there's still some sun light here.
We are in Tacuarembó, Uruguay .
The guy who picked us up ride at the last stop
speaks Portuguese and
was offering to pick us up
to a city that called "Carmelo" which is in the south of Uruguay.
He stopped here at this gas station ...
telling that he needed
to fix the car's tailpipe.
And then we decided to wait him here
So we can get some information and decide what to do...
if we stay here in Tacuarembó ...
to continue on our way hitchhiking tomorrow morning
heading to Paysandú, which is on the argentinian frontier.
Or if we'll join him on his way to Carmelo.
So here we are discussing...
whether join him to Carmelo
and sleep on his car, because we're gonna arrive
there arround 4 or 5 in the morning..
His car is old and is quite bad...
So the problem actually is... We are a little affraid...
of the guy.. Because he can try to extort us, or something like that.
Leandro: It's not because he is smuggler, this is not the problem. (ironic)
Leo : But you never know.
He picked us up on the road and has been so gentle all the time,
also offering us to sleep at the appartment provided by the place where he works.
Leandro: He also offered us some "empanadas" to eat...
Leo : So we do not know .
But he left us free to decide
whether we stay here or join him .
Driver : So, what are you going to do, afterwards?
Leo : Yeah, we can go with you.
But... would you mind if we sleep on the way?
Because as we're gonna arrive there around 4 or 5 in the morning ...
Driver : I do not know ... if you guys don't mind with my loud songs playing...
Leo : Tacuarembó ...
Leandro : This is something I was not really expecting to do.
Leo : What?
Leandro : Putting our backpacks in the back of the car ...
But at least this one can be easily accessed.
Jus for the recording, it is 5:45 am .
We arrived here at 5:30 in the morning.
I'm very grumpy .
No sleep at all .
Many hours passed on the way from
nine o'clock at night
until now.
Leandro : We arrived there at harbor for ferries to Buenos Aires
and they are charging 650 pesos (US$ 36 ) per person .
Leo : Now we 're walking trying to get out of the town ...
... but there's no one on the street to give us some information...
... so we 're walking somewhere ...
... we are assuming this is the way to get off town.
We intend to be there when the sun rises ,
what we expect to happen in an hour ...
Leandro : It is 9am and we are here somewhere ...
... between Mercedes and Fray Bentos .
And Leo is here drawing another sign.
So far we have been lucky, it's been quite quick to get a ride.
We got a bunch of rides already today.
We spent a sleepless night , we are too tired ...
hoping to get to Buenos Aires before 2pm.
Do not know if it will be possible .
But we'll see ...
So far it has been cool, we have found
very cool people here, in Uruguay ...
who have been giving us rides... and have been really cool..
and really kind people...
It's been a really cool experience .
And it is very beautiful here too, through the country side of Uruguay .
Driver: Do you have documents and papers all right? (in spanish)
Us: Yes , yes .
Driver: Are you bringing anything forbidden?
Leo: No.
Leo: To do the immigration paper procedures for leaving Uruguay ...
is it here, now?
Driver: Yes, it is now.
Leandro : But I think we don't really have to do any procedure for leaving...
...it is just for entering the country.
Leo : No, you have to do it when leaving as well.
Leandro : We didn't have to do it when leaving Brazil ...
Leo: In Brazil we don't have to, but here we do.
Leandro : We are here now crossing the bridge
" Rollercoaster " , between Uruguay and Argentina. (in portuguese)
Leandro : What city is this?
Leo : I do not know the name . Leandro : We do not know .
Leo : We do not have the map ...
... we don't even know where we 're going to.
We 're just going .
Leandro : We do not have internet we have basically nothing .
But we managed a feat unprecedented ...
... that we crossed Uruguay without spending, neither buying any Uruguayan peso .
It is 10:30 am.
We're in this city called...
Guay ...
Guay gual chu ...
Guay gual gua ah...
I do not know .
It is a city on the border of Argentina and Uruguay .
Leo : We got here now in this crossing on the exit of Gualeguaychú .
Leandro : Finally learned the name of the city .
Leo : Now going straight here, Buenos Aires is already close .
But we think we won't manage to get there in time ...
... before our host, Fabián, leaves home to work.
Leo : That's cute , the stone is smiling .
( Leandro laughs )
Leandro : Oh my gosh, Autism on the road.
Leo : Look how beautiful the smiling stone, guys!
I'll take it with me .
It looks like a potato.
Leando : Hey, what's up? (in spanish) Leo: Are you going to Buenos Aires ?
Driver : I'm going to Zarate .
Leo : Where ?
Driver : Zarate .
Leo : Is it this place in the entrance to Buenos Aires ?
Leo : Is there buses to Buenos Aires from there?
Driver : Yes , yes .
Driver : Where are you coming from?
Leo : Here. ( laughs ) Leandro: From Brazil.
Driver : From Brazil ?
Leo : Yeah, Brazil .
Leo : Have you ever been to Brazil?
Driver: Yes, I've been to Belo Horizonte. Leandro : Ahhh ! We are from Belo Horizonte!
Driver : Are you from Belo Horizonte?! That's cool !
Driver : I was exactly in Betim .
Leo : Betim?!
Driver : Yes, Betim ....
To FIAT ...
To the FIAT factory ...
We bring cars from Cordoba, Argentina ... to Brazil..
Driver: Here we let the province of Entre Rios ...
... and entered the province Buenos Aires.
Leo : We're entering the province of Buenos Aires now .
Leo: 80km is what is missing ...
... for us to get to Buenos Aires from here.
We are *** tired .
Leandro is already now brown ...
And me too.
This color is a result the mix of sunbeams...
and sunscreen lotion mixed with asphalt dust.
Leandro: Yeah, I put sunscreen on.
Leo : Well .. many people told us
it will be hard to get a ride
Because... people from Buenos Aires do not give rides, huh .
This is the fame that they have ...
that they are bad people ... ...
... "the worst" people ...
... in South America
Leo : The driver told us to take a bus ,
because he thinks it will be very hard to be picked up over here .
But we have no money though. We don't have even a local cent.
So we're gonna have to make it hitchhiking all the way
Leo: Are you happy ?
Leandro : No.
.. I'm sleepy ...
and hungry ...
I'm desperate for a bath ...
Leo : I don't even want to think on showing.
Because if I think about how I 'm dirty and full of sunscreen and dust...
... I'm gonna get desparate as well.
Leandro: Oh, honey ...
I'm paying for all my sins ! !
Oh goshhh!
Where are the clouds when I need them ?
Leo : Look how this guy looks so dirty!
The people passing by us might be looking at us
wishing they could throw a penny for been sorry for us.
Leandro: Yeah, throw us a bus ticket, please!
Leo : A bus ticket! hahah
Leo : There are three lanes here, in the exit of Zarate,
they go straight to Buenos Aires .
There's only 80km left.
The cars pass very fast .
We're gonna walk a little farther..
... to check if we find a less worse spot to hitchhike.
( This man had to stop his vehicle
to change the tire that had burst,
We went to him to ask and offer help .
He was an old man from Buenos Aires ,
he didn't even talked to us.
Still, we stood around, trying to
help him in any way while we were just ignored . )
Leo: It is 8:44 pm now, And we managed to arrive in Buenos Aires .
That guy left us ...
... at the Fabian's door.
Though Fabián is not at home anymore.
He's gonna be back from work at 11pm.
Leandro: Yeah, but since we're not under a sun
of 49 degrees, or on a road where no car stops...
desperate... and with no water or decency .
Leo: Damn, we've walked too much.
We are dead and dirty like a ***.
Leandro: Sleepless about 40 hours...
Leandro : But in the end everything worked perfectly.
Leo: Thanks to god who burst Pablo's tire,
a veeeery close man.
... who learned very well when the taught him "Do not talk
to unknown people" ...
Because we came to him trying to talk
and he hasn't even looked at us .
Leandro : Yeah, looks like he doesn't talk to anyone.
Because even with his wife on the phone he was an ***.
But that's okay , because ...
he left us at Fabian's door!
Leo : On the doorstep, honey!
Leandro : We are very happy and satisfied .
Leo : Yeah, but look ... we managed
to get from Porto Alegre to Buenos Aires ...
Crossing Rio Grande do Sul ..
and Uruguay ...
And we arrived in less than 2 days .
Leandro : What do we deserve? Congratulations.
Leo: We are to be congratulated..
Today was "hard level" day on the road.
Was an adult thing .
Leandro : I think today I had the most desperate time
during this trip.
I thought many times of suiciding: jumping in the middle
of the road and getting hit by a car. ( irony )
Leo : So, that's it.
We are in Buenos Aires ...
this journey ends here ... from Porto Alegre to Buenos Aires
"Hitchhiking on the road:
The first time of the blond
the blond girl, Leandro." (in spanish)
We're in a park in Buenos Aires
I don't have a clue what's its name .
Leandro : But it supposedly has free wifi .
Leo : So let's sit down and take a "mate" (argentinian tea).
Kidding, we don't have mate with us.
But let's try to find wifi .
