Here is the Montana weekly weather briefing, for the week of March 4th through March 10th.
If you are watching this briefing after Monday, March 4th, then you may wish to check your
local National Weather Service webpage, or call any of the four Montana National Weather
Service offices for updates, as conditions may have changed.
There are 3 potential hazards this week. The first hazard is a major winter storm that
is currently affecting Central and Eastern MT today. Blizzard conditions will affect
a good portion of Northeast MT. Expect difficult driving conditions due to falling and blowing
snow across the remainder of Central and Southeast MT. This winter storm will gradually let up
in intensity from west to east beginning this afternoon.
The second hazard this week is another round of light to moderate snowfall over Western
and Central Montana beginning on Wednesday afternoon and ending on Thursday. The heaviest
snowfall from this system is expected to occur in the mountains, but there could be enough
snowfall at lower elevations, that any wet roadways could freeze up on Wednesday night.
Finally, a return to more seasonable temperatures and early spring like conditions is expected
by this weekend, with high temperatures near to slightly above normal, along with melting
snow expected at all elevations. There will continue to be the chance for scattered rain
and snow showers across the southern tier of state for Friday and Saturday, but significant
amounts of precipitation are not expected at this time.
This map shows the expected precipitation across the state from today through early
Saturday morning. Overall, the heaviest precipitation is expected over Western Montana.
Here is the latest weather story graphic from the National Weather Service in Glasgow. This
weather story shows the different types of highlights in effect in their region, along
with the forecast snow amounts from this latest winter storm. Significant drifting of the
snow will also occur throughout the region. In the 8 to 10 day outlook, chances are above
average that much of Montana will experience below normal temperatures and above normal
precipitation. In reference to the 8 to 14 day outlook showing
above normal precipitation over portions of MT, this image depicts the precipitation amounts
from 2 different forecast models from about Noon on Monday, March 10th until about Noon
on Wednesday March 12th. Both models indicate the potential for significant precipitation
over Western Montana, but the exact timing, and how widespread the precipitation amounts
of over 1 inch will be, is still very uncertain at this time.
Here is a summery table, summarizing the expected weather this week.
Thank you for listening, and if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free contact
any of the four Montana National Weather Service offices at anytime.
