Hi everybody! I'm Not A Farm Girl. Today I'm going to be making lotion for the first time.
I'm a little bit nervous, but I have watched a lot of videos, so hopefully I'm set. The
tools I'll be using today are the double boiler, to melt the wax and oils in. A stick blender.
Some measuring cups, funnels, spatulas, and jars to put the lotion in. This is a kitchen
scale. It needs to measure in grams, and in 1/10th of an ounce so you can be precise when
you measure. The ingredients we will use are emulsifying
wax, stearic acid, and various oils. Today I have avocado oil, sweet almond oil, and
shea butter. That's the oil phase of the lotion. Distilled water is the water phase. The emulsifying
wax is what will make it all adhere together so it doesn't separate after the lotion is
made. After it's combined we'll add phenonip which
is a preservative, and fragrance. Alright I think we're set.
The other thing you need to do which I've already done is to make a sink of bleach water.
1 oz per gallon of water. Wash all of your tools, then give them a bleach bath, then
rinse them with tap water. So I've already done that so everything is sterile. And because
I'm making this for resale, none of this is ever used with food products. This is all
used strictly for cosmetic use. Ok, I have in this pot my oils, my emulsifying
wax, and the stearic acid, it's melted over a double boiler, and now I'll add the shea
butter. I'll let that melt. Today I'm using a kit I bought from Brambleberry.com.
I had looked at several recipes online, and I wasn't sure how much of each ingredient
I would need to buy. This came all pre-measured, and it breaks it down into smaller batches.
Since I'm just starting out and will be playing around with different fragrances, I wanted
to start out small. So that worked out good for me.
I will be sure and include all the websites where I ordered everything from, in my notes
for this video. So you can check it out if this is something you want to do on your own.
Or you can just buy from me and save yourself the trouble.
The shea butter is almost melted. The next thing that I will do is to add the distilled
water. It has been heated for one minute in the microwave.
I'm going to stir in the water. After I pour it, I will blend it with the stick blender.
This stirring took longer than I thought. It's been about 5-7 minutes. It's just beginning
to thicken. Now it's time to add the preservative.
Stir, blend, stir, blend. Add the preservative, and blend some more.
Once the preservative has been added, then add the fragrance. I'm a little scared because
I'm not sure of the exact proportions. This time I did 3:1, excuse me, 2:1.
2 portions lavender to 1 portion vanilla. We're going to give it a try and I hope that
it turns out wonderful and everyone loves it. If not, I'll be making adjustments.
Ok, welcome back. So our lotion has thickened. It's looking
pretty good. You don't want it all the way thick and cool, because then it won't pour
into the jars. Now I will begin pouring it into the jars.
There you have it! I made lotion! Thanks for watching, be sure to subscribe,
like, and comment. If you have made lotion before, I want to
hear about that. If you have something you think I should try let me know. And I'll be
looking forward to hearing about it. Thanks everybody for watching. I'm Not a Farm Girl.
