I was curious, and have been for
50 years, about the backgrounds
that scientists come from.
In fact I even did a book on
autobiographies of various scientists
that focused on their childhood
and what it was like.
It occurred to me that I ought to
survey the scientists
here at Texas A&M
and ask them a little bit about their background.
And to me, it wasn't particularly
surprising to discover
that 48% of them
had high school experiences
with either 4H Club or FFA,
Future Farmers of America,
or both.
I grew up and went to school
in central Alabama, in a very rural
school system and school district.
We only had about
250 students K through 12
in the school that I went to.
I was involved in 4H and FFA both
from age 9,
all the way through high school.
