I am going to climb high and sing...
...on top of the highest mountain.
So that I may be heard in the wilderness...
...which will echo my destitution.
Enough, enough...It will burn.
Playing Greek music in İzmir...
It's popular in İzmir, people do like it.
Because the melodies are the same, just the lyrics are different.
We choose this type of songs as far as we can.
This music was formed reflecting the nostalgia, and the longing for...
...what was left behind due to the exchange of two peoples.
People from here had to leave behind their lives, their jobs...
...their friends, their families and their loved ones...
And families from there had to come here.
And one of them was my family.
The father of my grandfather came to İzmir in 1918.
They stayed in Ödemiş for a year, and then moved here to İzmir.
He was married to my great-grandmother here.
Descendants of family members who had stayed there, they still live in Thessaloniki.
My great-grandmother met my great grandfather in Crete.
They got married there, and came here afterwards.
And all previous four generations before us lived their entire lives in İzmir.
I'm a descendant of a Cretan family.
I was 15 when I met Mert.
We saw each others' musical instruments in a cafe.
We were sitting next to each other, we talked the whole day.
We were interested in different genres of music back then.
But having been influenced by the cultural heritage of our families...
Because, you see, 80% of our generation in İzmir comes from the lineage of population exchange.
Just like our fathers...
So we developed our musical style in the direction of Turco-Greek cooperation.
And we decided to start a band.
This is how 'Okeanos' was formed.
We started as two guys, and now we are a band of six.
Two hours before taking the stage every day, we spend our time in the 'Pasaport' area...
...to watch the sunset. Because this port had a particular significance in history...
50-60 years before the Republic, all the entrances and exits to the Gulf of İzmir...
...were made from here. That's why it's called 'Pasaport' (Pass-port).
It's also the best place to watch the sunset in İzmir.
Those songs they sang to entertain us at home back when we were kids,
...we now play them in concerts to thousands of people.
This is a big honour for us.
Maybe they don't express it openly, but I feel that our elders are much proud of us too.
From Karataş...
or from Kordelio (Karşıyaka)
Why does it interest you
so you keep asking
which village I am from
since you do not love me?
