Why do we ask “Why?” We are an inquisitive bunch, us human beings.
From the moment we can talk we start to ask Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
You could say we are built with this innate desire to question.
To seek answers. To understand. “Why am I here?” “What is my purpose?”
“What is the meaning of life?” People joke that no one ever says on their
death bed, “I wish I had spent more time at the office” and yet from the outside
looking in it seems so many people spent their lives doing just that - working, straining,
accumulating, networking, struggling, acquiring, striving … to be successful, to get promoted,
to earn more money, to be praised, to be noticed, to be admired, to be special.
But deep inside we all know that there is more to life than these things. Indeed we
crave a revelation that we are meant for grand and honourable things. A life of purpose and
meaning that will make the world a better place simply because we were in it.
But how? What is it about our transitory, puny, little existence that could possibly
be of worth? What makes any of us valuable or necessary?
Absolutely nothing if you only believe in chance.
And absolutely everything if you are willing to concede you have been made by a divine
power for a higher purpose. A good God with marvellous intentions.
Carl W. Buechner famously said, “They may forget what you said, but they will never
forget how you made them feel.” And let’s face it - after all of this is over, all that
will really matter is how we treated each other.
But we are notorious for treating each other poorly and giving in to our own selfish insecurities.
Even the best of us put ourselves before others when we feel threatened or justified. Fighting
for “Our Rights” has become more important than sacrifice or humility … especially
when our personal survival or lifestyle might be forfeit.
So how can we change? How can we fulfil the purpose we were created for and be moulded
into the people we were created to be? By inviting the one who made us in … to
do the remodelling. He sent His template ahead to show us an example
of His perfect character and now He desires to shape us into a mirror image of Him.
To make us a vessel of light and love … Of compassion and joy
Of hope and integrity … Of Grace and Life A person who radiates HIS love and enriches
the lives of others simply by being in their lives
