ROBERT KING: By the spring of 2013, the intense fighting in
Aleppo, Syria had taken a serious toll on the Free
Syrian Army rebels, fighting Assad's troops in plain
clothes, Shabiha thugs.
Now, as the summer approaches, the conflict has transitioned
from a full-on front-line assault into a slow-paced but
still deadly sniper war.
Perched inside blown-out buildings and peering through
scopes, atop makeshift sniper rifles with limited ammo, the
FSA continues to pick off their enemies one
by one, day by day.
Do you remember the first time you killed one of the Shabiha
as a sniper?
SNIPER: [SPEAKING ARABIC]
ROBERT KING: Do you think this war in Aleppo has become a
sniper's war?
SNIPER: [SPEAKING ARABIC]
ROBERT KING: Near the roads that lead back into the FSA's
stronghold, the rebels have strategically placed IEDs
disguised as mannequins.
The improvised explosives are a desperate last resort, and
would only be used to buy time in the case that the rebels
are forced to make a hasty retreat with Assad's soldiers
at their heels.
Residents of Aleppo still cautiously carry on their day
to day lives the best they can, in the
midst of a war zone.
Bullet-ridden buses and other vehicles have been parked
along the road that separates the FSA's territory from that
of the government's soldiers.
Now that the battle has largely transformed into one
fought by the snipers, the simple act of crossing the
road can be deadly.
Where is all this coming from?
