Hi I'm David Kaynor for expertvillage.com. I think that it could be said as a general
sense that some relatively inexpensive strings can be found which have wire cores, and then
the higher grade wire core strings, and the braided wire strings, and then the synthetic
strings—nylon or Perlon, or whatever they call it—tend to be pretty expensive by comparison
to the simplest cheap wire core strings. Then gut strings, I believe, are to some extent
on par with the synthetic core strings but, I believe that some gut strings are very highly
priced. Now how long do they last? The matter of opinion: a properly cared for gut string
can last an incredible amount of time, but they are more susceptible than synthetic core
strings and wire core strings to changes in humidly; and a really rapid drying condition
could actually cause a gut string to snap if it is up to tension. On the other hand,
sooner or later the windings, the wrappings of all these strings can become frayed and
they can deteriorate and fail, and that is almost always a cause for replacing the string.
In terms of other measurements of desirability, I think a great deal is left to the individual
taste of the player and arguably the player's audience.
