Welcome! This tutorial will explore use of the Methodology limiter in PsycINFO on EBSCOhost.
The methodology of a study is an important piece of information for the researcher to consider. But did you know you can search for
studies that use a particular methodology? This can come in handy in a variety of circumstances. The list shown here represents
all of the methodologies that are currently used to index items in APA databases. For definitions, click the link in the video description.
To explore this limiter, let's search for articles that can provide an overview of treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder. I've set the
interface to search only PsycINFO, though this limiter is available in other APA databases. I already used the Thesaurus to identify the
Subject Heading Borderline Personality Disorder, and I've also added the term treatment to my search. Now I'll move into the Search
Options section to find the Methodology limiter. I'll scroll down and select Literature Review. I noticed that Meta Analysis is also an option -- I
can search for this methodology at the same time by holding down the control key while I click on the additional term. You can select as
many methodologies as you like this way -- they will be combined with an OR. You may note that some of the methodologies are nested under
others -- it's important t o know that these are not automatically included if you choose the parent methodology, so to speak. In this
example, if I were also interested in Systematic Reviews, I would want to select that as well. Now that I'm ready, I'll search and take a look at
my results. I see several relevant and recently published articles right at the top of my results
list, but there are enough here that I could continue to narrow my results if needed.
