Funny Books: The History of Wonder Woman
Today is a cultural right icon, but did you know
she was originally based on a psychologist theories
on power, eroticism, and gender relations?
Wonder Woman was created by Dr. William Moulton Marston
in 1940. Marston was an odd fellow
in comic book history. He was a Harvard-educated psychologist
whose research in blood pressure and emotional distress
led to the creation of the lie detector. Marston was
also famous for his DISC theory
on Human Emotion, which he created after observing
baby parties at local sororities. He lived
with equally intelligent wife, and his mistress,
whose bracelet inspired Wonder Woman's own
trademark accessories. Marston entered
the comic book industry after an article he wrote for Family Circle
Magazine copy caught the eye of Charlie Gaines
at All-American Comics. Gaines was looking for a new idea
that would increase his clout and credibility, and Marston
had just. The good doctor envisioned
a new term hero, a "Wonder Woman"
who would use the "feminine" power of love to defeat
the "masculine" concept a war, and give rise
to a female ruled society. Marston's
theories on gender power dynamics inspired
much was work, even given his character a magic lasso
else to do others to her will and also causing her
to lose her own powers if ever tied up
or chained by a man. All of which led
to many questionable panels. Ironically
Marston's ideal woman proved to be more popular
with boys than girls, Who made made up the majority
of Wonder Woman's initial audience. Thanks for watchin
and remember: "Wonder Woman!"
