My name is Josh Wimble, I am a junior majoring in advertising and political science with
a minor in English. I grew up overseas, in Thailand because of my parents work. I spent
about 13 years over there, my parents work in non-profit missions.
When I was looking at colleges Penn State really stood out. I’m really proud of the
work my parents do, I’m proud of the way that
they’re helping people overseas, but the one
thing that they regret, unfortunately, is that me and my five brothers don’t have
much in the way of financial support for our education
so they were really enthusiastic to hear that I got all these scholarship opportunities.
Every phone call that I’d have where an email had come in saying I got this scholarship
or that scholarship, my mom would be ecstatic. So these scholarships not only keep
me here but also keep me involved in these leadership positions that are extremely time-consuming.
My first year here at school I joined a fraternity, I became the social chair
of that fraternity which really helped me out for my career because I did a lot in the
way of advertising for events and concerts. I became president which is pretty much like
the CEO of a small organization. There are a lot of people out there who, for different
reasons, on the surface, may not appear to be disadvantaged but come from unique situations
like mine where they can’t afford a college education without these scholarships
so people making them available for people who excel in their academic or extracurricular
activities who really value this college experience, that’s huge.
Every class, every project is so much more valuable because I know how much it’s worth
and I know that without those gifts and opportunities I wouldn’t be in them so it’s what
keeps me working really hard, you know, not dropping classes, not ever taking for granted
any of the work because that work is so valuable and it was provided through these really
gracious donors.
