The 2017 UCI Road Cycling World Championships take place in Bergen, Norway in September. Presentations will be held on Saturday September 16, with the first races on Sunday September 17. What are the UCI Road World Championships? UCI Road World Championship titles are contested for road race, individual time trial and team time trial events. In the road race and individual TT, there are categories for elite men, elite women, junior men, under-23 men and junior women. The TTT is run using trade rather than national teams. Winners of the senior individual time trial and road race earn the right to wear the coveted rainbow jersey of world champion for the following 12 months in that discipline. In 2018, the World Championships will move to Innsbruck (Austria) and the 2019 edition will take place in Yorkshire (Great Britain). Teams will head south, with the early part of the course being quite flat. Turning east, the route winds out to the fjord to the centre of Kleppestø and over the Askøy Bridge. On the Bergen side of the bridge, riders will find a 4km technical section, followed by a 600 climb with an average gradient of 10 per cent at Loddefjord. The following 10km are flat, before the second 3km climb to Birkelundsbakken, which has an average gradient of 6 per cent, and some steeper pitches of 16 per cent. There is a 0.6km section of cobbles near Bryggen, then the course finishes with some more technical roads around the harbour and historical buildings at Bryggen. UCI World Championships Road Race Course All riders will cover the same 19.1 km course – though distances will vary and the male juniors and elite men will complete an extra 40km stretch – which starts at Rong and is relatively flat. The circuit departs starts with a flat 200m, well-lit tunnel, then crosses the Puddefjords Bridge. There’s a short 500m climb 2km in at Solheimsviken, and another longer 1km climb with a 5 per cent gradient at 5km. There’s a flat stretch before riders will need to prepare for the climb up Mount Ulriken – a 1.4km ascent with an average gradient of 6.5 per cent. The climb gives way to a technical descent before a flat run into the city centre.
