Welcome to SET-SIG's UDL "App"lications.
This series of videos will explore how apps can, when chosen with intent, support the
design and delivery of Universal Design for Learning.
We will focus in on nine powerful apps as we address each of the nine Guidelines that
define UDL.
This video will explore Multiple Means of Action and Expression as we narrow our focus
down to Guideline 5: Options for expression and communication
To support this guideline, we will use the iPad app "Book Creator".
Book Creator is a flexible tool that provides a variety of ways to create and "use multimedia
for communication"
...as students meet Writing standards with inclusion of technology to support the production
and publishing of their writing.
In this activity, students explore the question "How can multimedia help me communicate my
thoughts clearly and concisely?".
To help them answer this question they will explore a current environmental problem and
create a report in the form of a text book outlining and ranking what people can do to
help.
Consider using Book Creator over the course of a year, each time exploring a different
form of communication or media, such as text or video, editing and revising work based
on the needs of the reader and the constructs of the medium.
In this activity, students have already created basic textbooks and explored features of text.
They are now ready to purposefully include multimedia that best suits the purpose of
the text and the needs of the reader. After students have completed research have
them gather or create various multimedia for inclusion into their book. You may want to
complete a whole class activity. For example, have them interview each other in role or
interview actual individuals, and include the video in the book...
Or let them determine what they will include. For example they might create an audio file
of the text or a link to a website to provide options for access to information.
Engage students in discussion and sharing to ensure they understand the purpose of the
various types of media, how they enhance learning, what constitutes quality media and who benefits
from its inclusion.
Consider publishing student's books in ibooks or on iTunes in ePub format. Invite other
students to read and comment on their books.
In this video we have explored how Book Creator effectively supports Options for expression
and communication. As you design your units and lessons consider student variability from
the onset. View each "app" through the lens of UDL to
ensure it is a rich tool that helps make learning accessible to all.
The use of Book Creator supports many UDL Principles. The app provides students choice
as they create multimedia products. Book Creator, with its intuitive design, minimizes threats,
optimizes relevance and builds autonomy as students design and build resources or read
books created using the app.
