Welcome to this tutorial about creating and using Groupings in your Moodle course.
In this video, we will go over how to create a grouping,
how to add groups to the grouping and how to assign the grouping to a resource and an
activity.
[Pause]
Groupings enable you to have groups of students work on different activities.
These activities are not seen by other groups or groupings.
You can release activities and resources to different groupings without other groupings
in the class seeing the material.
Groupings are beneficial for students who need to take make-up exams or require additional
time for exams and assignments.
It is important to remember that the Groupings feature works in coordination with the
Groups feature.
Best practice suggests that you create Groups before you use the Groupings feature.
To create a Grouping
[Pause]
you must display the Groups screen. From the “Administration” block,
click the “Groups” link.

Click the Save changes button.
The Groupings screen is displayed and the grouping you just created is available.
Now, you must add groups you want to the grouping. Assuming that you have created groups already,
in the “Edit” column, click the “Show groups in groupings” icon;
it looks like a group of three people. The “Add/remove groups” screen is displayed.
In the “Potential members” area on the right side of the screen,
select the group or groups you want to add to the grouping. Click the Add button.
The groups you selected are moved to the “Existing members” area on the left side of the screen.
When you are finished adding groups to this grouping, click the Back to groupings button.
The Groupings screen is displayed. Note that in the “Groups” column, you can see the
groups
you added to the grouping. You can now assign the activities to the grouping.
When creating an activity,in the “Common module settings” area, click the Show Advanced
button
to display the Groupings information.
Please note that in the “Group mode” drop-down list, you need to select “No groups”.
If you choose other options like visible or separate groups, the grouping feature will
not work.
In the “Grouping” drop-down list, select the grouping you want to assign to the activity.
Select the “Available for group members only” check box.
Select the other options for the activity as needed and save the activity. On the course
page,
the grouping name will be displayed in brackets after the activity name,
indicating that the activity will be displayed to the members of that particular grouping
only.
When creating a resource, in the “Common module settings” area,
click the Show Advanced button to display the Grouping information.
Select the “Available for group members only” check box. In the “Grouping” drop-down
list,
select the grouping you want to assign the resource to. Save the resource. On the course

the grouping name will be displayed in brackets after the resource name.
That’s all there is to creating and using Groupings.
We hope you’ll take advantage of this Moodle feature.
