Hi Everyone and welcome to our course: Explore the Common Core for mathematics, kindergarten
through grade 5.
This course is a storehouse of resources that you can use with your PLC teams to help transition
to Common Core State Standards.
We are currently looking at the overview page, which gives you a brief summary of what the
Common Core State Standards is all about.
In this block is a brief 3 minute video that explains how the common core state standards
are different than our previous 1997 standards.
We also have a timeline of implementation for the Common Core State standards, and the
flow chart below summarizes the phases of our district's implementation.
If you want a more detailed description of the implementation, you can download the Common
core implementation plan right here.
Our next page is the announcements page.
Here we will post any current news as it is released from CDE or RCOE.
Our current announcement is a free online course that is being offered by Jo Boaler.
The course is designed for teachers and parents to help prepare them in the implementation
of the new common core state standards.
If you are interested in signing up for the class, just scroll to the bottom of the page
and click o this link to register.
Our next page in this course is the California Common Core Resources page.
This provides several links, documents, and videos that will help your PLC teams dig deeper
into the common core standards.
Any image you see will either be a link to a website page, a file document or publication,
or a video that you can download and view.
If you have any great resources you would like to share, please do so in the discussion
block here.
The California Common Core Resources are listed by different categories: 8 standards of mathematical
practices, depth of knowledge, math shifts, math progressions, rigor & relevance.
To find out more about any of these topics, just click on the subpages.
You should also notice that the resource pages are delineated by grade levels.
Let's say you teach 3rd grade and you want to find something specific for your grade.
When you click on your grade level, you will have some resources on the main page, such
as kid friendly 8 standards of mathematical practices, academic math vocabulary, the frayer model, and some problem solving strategies.
You will also see that the grade level has sub pages, websites, videos, and publications.
To view these specific resources, just click on the respective subpages.
Our next page in this course is Smarter Balanced Assessments.
Here you will be able to view some sample tasks by grade level, view some sample problems,
and link to the smarter balanced website that explains general item specifications for each
grade level.
Our last page is the presentations page. ON this page, you will find all the presentations
from the workshops you attended on our June 13th Common Core Professional Development
day.
With that, I hope you find this course useful as you begin your transition into the common
core state standards.
Once again, please share any great resources you may find in your exploration of Common
core state standards and please feel free to email me with any comments or questions
you may have.
Thank you!
