Hey there. This is Zach Prez with a quick keyword demo for expanding your keyword list
and finding some long tail phrases. I like to use the Google Keyword Tool which you can
find by typing into Google: 'Google keyword tool' and just plug in your phrase that you
want to expand, and if you expand advanced options you can check the radio button for
ideas containing my search terms. And what this does, it returns a list of all the phrases
people search for that contain the word 'wedding photography' and tells you how many searches
per month are being done for that term. So 'wedding photography' is contained in 1.2
million search phrases and 'professional wedding photography' is contained in 18,000 search
phrases. Looking at this, you can not only assess search volume (which phrases are searched
more than other phases) but you get a quick snapshot of competition as well. Competition
is how many people are buying this term in the paid Google Adwords. And as you scroll
down the list you'll see certain phrases are less competitive. It would be more easy to
rank for 'wedding photography unveiled' because this green bar is not as full as 'candid wedding
photography,' which would be more difficult to rank for.
Toward the top left there are different Match Types. Broad means 'professional wedding photography',
those three words were used anywhere within the search phrase. Exact means the user typed
in the phrase shown and only the phrase shown. So they typed exactly 'wedding photography
tips' into search. Phrase means they typed those words in that order but there may have
been other words as a part of the phrase. So this one, for example, they might have
typed 'digital wedding photography tips' and that would still be a part of this 12,000
searches per month. So the Broad is going to give you the most results. Exact and Phrase
searches would be less than that.
To broaden your keyword selection you can show results for all keyword ideas and when
you search this, it will give you a lot of related phrases. Like 'wedding venues' doesn't
contain the words 'wedding photography' that I searched for at the top, but it's related.
So this might give you ideas outside of your phrase that you typed. Like 'wedding pictures'.
Pictures is another way people might search for photography. So this can give you great
ideas as well.
Another tool I like is Traffic Travis. It's a PC-only download to your computer. It's
got a lot of great reports within it. For example, Backlinks To Site is a great one.
But it's got a good keyword finder. If I type 'wedding photography' and I can go fetch 80
keywords, it'll give me a list of the number of daily searches in Google, Yahoo, and MSN
for words related to wedding photography. This gives me a lot of different ideas of
words I can optimize for, like 'creative wedding photography' or 'cheap wedding photography'.
Those are the long tail phrases that will be more easier for me to rank on than a main
term like 'wedding photography'.
Usually what I'll do is export these results to an Excel file and if that enables me to
come up with a priority list of maybe the top 20 niche phrases I want to rank for and
then I can start to implement those in my page content and in links pointing back to
my site.
