Hi, my name is Shaun Kerr and I'm a technician here at The Arches. I deal with all aspects
of live sound, lighting and AV. On a day-to-day basis I'll deal with maintenance, equipment
checks, repairs, building stages, live sound mixing to programming and operation of the
lighting rig so it's a very varied job. My journey to this position started when I
left school and studied an HND in Sound Production and Sound Technology at college. From there
I got my first job as a technician at Alton Towers then I progressed to London to work
with an in-house technician in a theatre then I moved to Wales and worked for the Welsh
National Opera, did a bit of touring and now I work in The Arches.
Up until now, coming from a theatre background, working in The Arches has given me the opportunity
to evolve as more of a live sound engineer which I may not have had the chance to do
- it's brilliant, fantastic. Walking out on to the main stage at T In The
Park, 40,000 folk in front of us, saying one-two in the mic - it might sound eh, stuff like
that, that's really a big thing. You've really got to sell yourself, you've
got to network with the people who are already doing it, volunteer yourself with the venues,
the theatres, the companies that you want to work for. You've really just got to work
hard and it and make yourself a product that people are going to want to either work with
or take on board - it doesn't come to you, you've got to really go for it.
