Erik: What makes it so difficult for people to connect emotionally online?
Dan: Really good question. The internet is just like TV, so when TV first came out it
was a very informational structure, it was news, it was information, it was very static
and unemotional. And then over time the medium adjusted to be much more dramatic and pull
on your heart-strings. The same thing is going to happen with the internet. Right now we
have a lot of very transactional informational data driven sites and we have to move in the
future to more of an emotional connection with our media. Now, right now that’s partially
design, so the very clean computerized Google type design is great for what it does, but
it does not breed emotional connection, it does not say ‘humanity’. I think Facebook
is the closest because you can see what your friends are doing, but I do think that we’re
entering a phase when design is going to change to be much more human oriented. When it’s
going to feel like you’re connected, when you’re going to website with an expectation
of having an emotional experience not just an intellectual one. And I think that really
hasn’t happened yet but there is a wave of companies that are starting to do this
and I think that’s the next big wave in design.
