Hi, I'm Steve Estey and I'm seeking the NDP nomination here in Dartmouth North. If you're
watching this video I think it's probably because you're a resident of Dartmouth North
and you're thinking about who you might want to vote for and I hope you consider voting
for me.
So, Dartmouth North. We moved here 7 years ago, really love it, we live by the Brightwood
golf course, right in the centre of the riding. Our son Isai went to school at Harbourview
Elementary School and then Bicentennial Junior High. This year he started at Dartmouth High
so he's been through the whole school system here and it's been a really great experience
for him. Great teachers and great community and through that, through his school system
and participation in the school system we've got to meet a lot of people who live in the
area as well. It's a wonderful part of the city.
I've travelled around the world, I've lived across the country. I came back to Dartmouth
North to raise a family, and to be part of the community. As I say it's a wonderful place
to live and I think it's got huge, huge opportunities.
I think, you know, that there's just so much diversity here, and diversity for me is really
a thing from which we draw a huge strength. And I think that the diversity, people coming
from different backgrounds, people doing different jobs, people having different life experiences
we come together as a community in Dartmouth North, we really have a lot to offer the city
and the province, and I think that Dartmouth North can take a real leadership role because
of that diversity.
The other reason, quite honestly, why I'd like to be an MLA is because I've worked for
a long time in the area of human rights and disability rights and I see this government,
the NDP government, taking some steps in what I see as a very positive direction. Things that
are happening around disability rights here in Nova Scotia are moving in a great direction
and I think that we need to continue that, and I think that I, as a person with a disability,
could make a really strong contribution in the legislature to that. I've worked on these
issues for 20 years, I know them very well, and I'd like to be able to bring that voice
to the discussion. But at the same time, because of my life experience and because I live here
in the riding and appreciate its diversity and its richness and culture and values and
all of those things, I think that I would be an effective representative for people
here in the riding as they try to live their life here in Dartmouth North so it's not all
about disability rights, it's about people.
The final thing that you should know about me that you might not already know is that
about 10 years ago I lost my hearing, so I'm a late deafened person. While I speak, as
you can tell now, I can't hear so I use computer interpreters when I communicate with folks,
people on keyboards or blackberries, that kind of thing. But I think it's important
for you to know that about me, simply because it's part of my character and my nature. I've
faced some challenges in my day. Going deaf when you're 35 years old is certainly a challenge
but I've managed, I think, to overcome that challenge and certainly continue to participate
in a very active way in my community.
I've entered this race at the last minute and very frankly it's an uphill battle. I
need all the help that I can get. If you're at all interested in what I've had to say
and you feel that you can support me, please contact me. Without your support I might not
win and I really would like to. Thanks for taking the time to listen to me and thanks
for thinking about supporting me.
