Welcome to the National Careers Service, Here For You.
Last time we talked about volunteering.
Today we are going to be talking about interviews.
Yes, everybody's nervous at interviews.
But there's a good reason for it.
It's a really important event to get right first time.
There's no second chance.
Okay, you might get invited in for a second interview...
...but often that next ten minutes, that half an hour...
...however long it takes...
...is going to make all the difference...
...as to whether you get that job.
So, think about it in three stages.
Before the interview you've got to prepare.
In the interview you've got to deliver.
After the interview you need to get some feedback.
This might not be your last interview...
...so you want some feedback ready for the next interview.
So okay, preparing could be different for different people.
You might be really nervous if you don't know where it is.
Your preparation could be simply to find out where it is...
...do a dummy run, find the route so you can rest assured...
...you'll sleep tonight because you know where to go tomorrow.
Do a bit of preparation on the company.
Find out who you're going to be working for...
...and what they are after.
You might have the job and person specification already...
...with lots of information on.
But what will you be doing when you actually get there?
What's the team going to be like?
What's the environment going to be like?
When you're in the interview...
...most people will say, 'Oh just be yourself.'
That is true...
…but it's really difficult to get the right message across...
...when you've got a little bit of nervousness in the background.
But remember that the people interviewing you...
...might be just as nervous as you.
They might not have done it before.
They might not know what questions to ask.
And it's really important they get the job right...
...just as it is for you.
So if you need to pause...
...that's okay. Tell them...
...'I'm not sure about that. Can I come back to it later?'
That's absolutely fine.
And then you can ask questions at the end of the interview too.
That will show you're interested in the company.
It will show that you want to know more.
Ask genuine questions.
Don't have pre-written-down ones...
...unless you think it's something that might be useful.
Afterwards the feedback which hopefully you're going to get…
...is important. So one of your questions...
...during the interview could be...
...'When am I likely to hear from you?'
'Is it okay to call back another time to get some feedback?'
And that opens the door...
...gives you licence to get in touch again...
...and get that valuable information.
So okay, that's the interviews.
So where next?
That's what we are going to talk about next time.
See you then.
