Women in Islam
When it comes to debates about Islam,
women and their status are often front and centre. Key objections include
Muslim women suffer in silence and that the veil stands in the way of progress.
We even saw the treatment of Muslim women used as a reason to justify
invading Afghanistan.
No doubt Muslim women have difficult lives. Like many non-Muslim women they are
affected by poverty, conflict and narrowly defined cultural or religious values.
However, the status of women is very clear in Islam's scripture the Quran.
Women have a host of rights ranging from owning property to having independent
income. They have the right to marry whom they choose and to divorce. The Quran is
also clear in its tone that men and women are equal in the sight of God.
In the Quran God speaks to men and women together. The standard for Muslim women
was set by the Prophet's wife Khadija. She was known as the "Mother of the
believers" - a way to acknowledge the status she held in the community. Khadija
was a successful business person, an independent thinker, and the Prophet
trusted her opinion above others. In Islam women and men are encouraged to work
together to create a better society. They're complimentary to one another, each
fulfilling his or her obligations as equal partners.
