My name is Wilson Johnson. I'm a CS Major at University of Texas at Dallas.
My name is Mike Purvis. I'm studying computer science at the University of Hawaii
at Hilo.
My name is Tracy Oguni. I'm a software engineering major at the University of Texas
in Arlington.
It's undeniably clear that mankind and technology at this point in time are
inseparable.
So, I made an app called ecosystem and it essentially combines gamification with
education.
I've loved video games and one thing I noticed is that it has an achievement
system and it has a reward system
and so I thought, why don't we integrate that with education.
As they complete it, you know, the stars turn purple or different colors.
It gives that visual, that sense of instant gratification that people are always
looking for.
I heard about Pearson's coding competition on Facebook.
The application I created was a custom Drupal module
I need just notifications and reminders
we can actually create apps that can tap into push notifications
The thing is you're going to have to do that from each platform.
All of these guys are gonna have text messaging
There's a lot of existing universities that use Drupal as their university website.
So I'm making it really easy for them to tap into Pearson.
I created an application called StudyBuddy.
It's a planning and scheduling application
that students can use to manage their assignments
Okay, if this assignment takes ten hours I can start the day before and get
it done
but then something might go wrong and you turn in an assignment half-done.
So, what this app basically does is it gets the amount of time you need
for an assignment and your due dates. And with that information it
schedules study sessions.
What wins out? The--the technical, you know, complexity or the innovation
the creativity?
This has been great. I-I really appreciate the camaraderie with the other
contestants and it's been really fun.
The whole time I was thinking how good the other applications were .
They were innovative, they're interesting, and they will be very useful.
You not only come up with the ideas of actually implementing these apis
and ideas of bringing them to life. It was awesome.
Our third place winner is StudyBuddy. Tracy
00:02:30.36Use time management as one of the key things. You're given a deadline
you have to make sure you get your stuff done. Your having a tool like that
now just for education is learning but also to prep students for their future
career field as [INAUDIBLE]
The first place winner...
It is Mike and his Drupal integration. And Wilson gets second.
I've spent a long time working on this and I had a great time, learned a
lot
and I think it's going to help me on my resume and my future
We love the idea of gamification. It's the big buzz in the world today.
especially in education
I actually went into this and I didn't even think my idea would be accepted.
I thought it was too abstract.
This helps target a whole new group of students, so, great job.
For someone who is interested in learning to code or feels intimidated by it
I would say just go for it. Coding is just about solving problems.
So if you like solving problems, then it's for you.
