Manas River floods over in Xinjiang. Due to melting ice from a sudden surge in spring
temperatures, the Manas River in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China overflowed,
submerging thousands of acres of farmland, making roads impassable, and leaving over
100 motorists stranded. This is the largest melting ice flood in two decades in Xinjiang,
with officials saying that additional snow from this past winter together with unprecedented
warming had resulted in the inundation. China's military personnel in Xinjiang quickly offered
help with evacuations as well as stacking sandbags to prevent flood waters from reaching
residential areas, and there were fortunately no reports of injuries or casualties.
Our appreciation for the Chinese soldiers and others involved in helping victims of
the spring floods. We pray that such conditions will subside as we work to restore the Earth's
balance through our greater kindness toward all beings
