I'm John Henley and I live in Nashville, Tennessee. I currently work at a local architecture firm
here in Nashville. I basically do a lot of the conceptual illustrations
in the design, a lot of the 3D modeling. But initially I'll sit down with some of the
architects and we'll brainstorm ideas on different architectural
elements, and what the facade will look like, and eventually that leads up to a finished,
polished rendering. It seems like as long as I've been around
I can remember I've always been drawing. When I was 3 I did something called "Watermelon."
It was a watercolor that I did at the house and my mom had submitted
it to the county fair. And it won first place in the county fair
for my age group, and I think that, for my parents, kind of solidified the
idea of me being an artist. And ever since then, all I've done is draw.
I've been influenced by, I'd say M.C. Escher, Picasso, you know, Divinci, there's all these
different people. So my father is also a conceptual artist and
illustrator for the architecture firm that I work with currently.
And so I came in and started working with him hand in hand, and kind of learning how
to draw in perspective. Stylistically I'd like them to be more along
the lines of, you know, a graphic novel-esque type hand style almost.
I work very fast but loose to try and capture movement within whatever it is that I'm drawing
or painting at the time. Every day that I go into work and I sit down
and draw something, I discover something new and a new way of doing
things. And every day is kind of a different turning
point in refining my skill set. And also having my father, who is also an
artist, kind of set that bar, and then constantly trying to keep up with him, or, at least to
me, to be as good as he is, so...
