Hello everyone. My name is Ana Tenorio. I'm currently a third year majoring in Landscape
Architecture in the College of Environmental design, and I am from Los Angeles California.
So the reason I chose Berkeley is primarily because it's in a good geographical location.
Since I was interested in Landscape Architecture I thought it hosted one of the best programs.
So I was right, I get to do a lot of outdoor courses, and I get to hike up in the fire trails.
So what I decided to do was to sign up for a summer program known as Summer Bridge, and
so I had the opportunity to actually be a Berkeley student. And I took a math course
as well as a Chicano Studies course, and the good thing about that was that I got to make a
lot of friends. And so I came in as a freshman knowing my way around campus.
When I moved in to my first semester at Cal I actually came with my dad and my siblings. So they were
excited, I was excited, there was so many parents, I made new friends. I wanted to live close
to campus so I decided to live here in Freeborn which a substance free program. It's very
convenient, because it's only a block away from the Berkeley campus, and it has a beautiful courtyard
as well as an underground fitness area. And a lot of our extra curricular activities are
actually held out here so it was fun coming out to the talent show and admiring all these
trees and the humming birds and spring. 0:01:36:000,0:01:38.600 This is Cafe Strada one of my favorite hang out spots.
It's a very common place for many students, mainly Architecture students, and everyone
who's a block away from the Berkeley campus. If you look across from Strada, there's the
Berkeley campus, and Wurster Hall is right there. 0:01:54.800,0:01:56:000 This is Wurster Hall, as I've mentioned earlier;
this is home to the Landscape Architecture department as well as Architecture
and Urban Studies. So this is Ramona's cafe. You can actually use your student meal points
when you're living in the dorms, and they also take cash as well as credit card, and they
have awesome breakfast sandwiches as well as lunch sandwiches. And it's located in Wurster Hall
This is the Wurster lobby, also known as our common use place for reviews, and what
you're seeing on the pin-up boards are actually presentations that will be presented tomorrow
during our Circus. It's a college-wide event when our classes are canceled, and many prestigious
professionals in design come over, and they hear our presentations on projects that we
worked on all year long or during a semester. And they give out awards as well as other scholarships.
This is room 250 our undergraduate advising office and this is where you can
find the advisers for Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Studies.
Another important thing to know about CED is that we have computer labs both for Architecture and Landscape Architecture.
This is the second floor known as the Landscape Architecture lab. So some of the classes which
I've taken here are Landscape Architecture 134B, and that's where I get to learn how to
use Rhino as well as CAD, and then you have the Adobe Suite programs there's Photoshop
as well as Illustrator and InDesign. And we have all the printers you need here as a well
as a plotter to print large projects.
So the reason I recommend getting access to the computer
lab is simply because you have the opportunity to plot here or also known as printing. And it's
a lot cheaper than going off to other places and if we ever mess up for whatever reason
you can get a refund for your projects. So this is the third floor known as the Landscape
Architecture floor or Studios and right over there is my studio space. So the benefit of
being a student at Cal in architecture, landscape architecture, is that you get a studio space
so you have an awesome desk along with a pin-up wall. And as you can see I have a lot of
my design work for the semester pinned up. Also on my desk is one of my typography models
which I crafted, and I had a lot of fun with.
My first semester at Cal I took a series of
14 units, and the classes that I took were the following: English R1A along with a workshop
also known as English 98. The focus for my English course was Utopian Literature. I
had the opportunity to learn a lot more about Plato and other Renaissance philosophers.
I took Environmental Design 1 known as People and Environmental Design, and the things I
learned were a variety of topics ranging from Architecture to Landscape Architecture, as
well as City and Regional Planning. I had the opportunity to carve a book in which I
realized I was very interested in typography. One of my favorite classes on campus, taught
by Professor Saragoza, and it's Ethnic Studies 10AC, A History of Race and Ethnicity in Western
North America. The interesting thing about this course was I learned history very different
from what I learned in my K-12 education so that was a good challenge, and I had several
epiphanies. I took History 98 which is similar to a DeCal and what a DeCal is, is a course
taught by students. In this course I learned a lot about the resources available on campus,
how to navigate the University itself from research to volunteering to being an active
student. I certainly wouldn't change a single thing about my first semester at Cal. I was
very involved in all my courses, and I had the opportunity to meet amazing professors.
So my first semester at Cal I was involved in the Chicano and Latino Architecture Student
Association in which I participated on various activities from firm tours to going to their
lecture speaker workshops as well as learning how to put my resume and portfolio together.
I was also involved in Hermanas Unidas which is a club on campus. The hardest part of my
first semester was learning to manage my time. Inevitably being a Freshman on campus, all
I wanted to do was explore all that was out there, from clubs to classes. I over-booked
myself. You're going to meet your best friends here very likely. I spent a lot of time in
studio as well as afterwards, and I swear I've met some of my best friends here. We go out
on the weekends, and seriously you're going to love your education at Cal.
He's like what are you majoring in. And I'm like Architecture at the time, and he's like well I'm Civil engineering,1
and he's like that's awesome you're going to be the architect of your own life.
