bjbjm Bunya to Bay gets an ICT boost Steve Roach: Schools in South East Queensland and
one in North Queensland have chosen a couple of students to come along on the journey.
We ve got 23 students from 12 different high schools and they re following the Brisbane
River from the source in the Bunya forests of the South Burnett, all the way to Moreton
Bay. Along the way the students will be studying the river and the quality of the water, so
one of the major goals of Bunya to the Bay is to gather water quality data and compare
it to previous expeditions but we can also load it to the world monitoring website so
other people can study our data. So the involvement of Education Queensland s mobile communications
unit has been a huge advantage, a big improvement over previous years. To have satellite and
3G connectivity means we ve got instantaneous access whenever we need it. Students are using
it for their research, so when they find something and they need more information on it they
can access it immediately as well as upload our data. Ben Nicholls: This is our mobile
communications trailer, which is designed to give us satellite communications and those
sort of things in remote areas that don t have any other means of communication. The
idea being that we can roll this type of device up, connect via satellite or via 3G using
either mains or generated power. As part of this project we ve been supplied with 20 laptops
which have the capability of 3G connectivity. What we ve done is supply one per child and
they re able to connect and do they re research to be able to report and show their teachers
and the kids at their schools what they re doing on this camp. Ben: So far we ve hiked,
biked and I ve done a lot of canoeing down the Brisbane River collecting data and water
samples. The IT people supplied 20 laptops for us to use and it s been very important
to have internet connection, because then we can research and collect data when we re
actually on the river and can access that vital information straight away. Steve Roach:
So as well as learning outcomes we ve had to focus on social interaction, we ve got
students from a range of different high schools, different backgrounds and the kids have responded
well. Sarah: I ve never really camped that much before, so it s been a whole new experience
for me but it s been really great and getting to do it with such lovely people and with
our friends. Ben: It s been absolutely great, I ve really enjoyed it. I ve made a lot of
lifetime friends and especially knowledge-wise, I ve learnt so much in so little time and
it s just been the most fantastic time of my life. urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags
