Let's talk about acting your song. When you look at a song, you'll realize that often
it's a brief emotional moment. It's not necessarily like a big acting monologue where there is
a long beginning, a long middle and a long end. Everything's condensed. But you still
want to break that song down as if it's a monologue. It's really important that you
act your song. That you are interesting as you sing. So, ask yourself the five "w's".
Who is this person? What are they doing? Where are they? When is it? And why are they doing
what they're doing? Ask yourself if there are moments in the song. Does the character
learn something? You want to make sure that you, as the actor learn something within the
song. You might want to write it down, and say it as a monologue. And then practice it
as a monologue. And then take it back in. Just like when we've been breaking down our
songs, circle the important words. Find out where the story goes. Remember, find the beginning,
the middle and the end in the song. And try to make it fit truthfully into its moment.
Musical theater is not real because you're singing your emotions, but it should be truthful
to the show.
