If you take the same swing Ride Cymbal pattern and play on the High Hat, while doing the
heel toe, playing, shutting the High Hat on 2 and 4, like that, you get that? Which is
very common pattern found in swing music and it's also played like this, see how it's open, shut open, shut . But when
your playing the timing is on the Ride Cymbal, it's very common to keep the High Hat going
on 2 and 4. But the thing you have to realize is the High Hat is not the time keeping cymbal,
that is the Ride Cymbal. The Ride Cymbal is where the time is, unless of course you play
the Ride Cymbal pattern on the High Hat, then the High Hat is the main time keeper. But
the High Hat is just there to accent the 2 and the 4. You can hear it very loud in swing
music, big band music, but when you listen to other jazz they start to take the High
Hat off the beat so it's also a player in where your ideas go. So that's the High Hat.
