My research area is gender and sexuality in the media and so I teach courses that look
critically and theoretically at representations of especially the body and sexuality in the
mainstream media. I teach these classes at the undergraduate as well as the graduate
level and in all of them I try to encourage students to not only to become familiar with
the wealth of scholarship in this area and the continually evolving dynamic diverse perspective
of different scholars to look at these issues, but also to be able to think critically about
those representations and to think in terms of challenging
and perhaps even engaging in activism around those issues. Because again one of
my...one of the driving forces for me in teaching these kinds of classes is just issues of social
justice - feminism, you know, egalitarianism - those
kinds of things and that's what I want to try to inspire students to be thinking about
as well.
