How to Drill Drainage Holes for Container Gardening. If your favorite pot isn't providing
enough drainage, add a hole or two by following these simple steps. You will need Pot with
insufficient drainage Nail Electric drill Drill bits and rubber mat or damp towel (optional).
Step 1. Set the pot upside down on a flat surface. Use a rubber mat or damp towel to
keep the pot from slipping. Step 2. Make a small ding in the pot's surface with a nail
to mark where you will drill the hole. Step 3. Make a pilot hole with your electric drill
to keep the drill bit from slipping when you make the larger hole. Be sure to use the correct
drill bit for the type of pot you are using. Selecting the wrong bit may crack your pot.
Step 4. Run cold water over your pilot hole. Keeping the pot cool will reduce the risk
of cracking the pot. Step 5. Drill the drainage hole with your electric drill, making sure
that the drill bit is at a 90 degree angle, perpendicular to the pot. Step 6. Flip the
pot over so that it is right side up, and start planting. Did you know Bamboo grows
faster than any other plant on Earth.
