Do you remember that fast-food-scalding-coffee case? You know, the one involving the woman
who spilled hot coffee on her lap and got millions? The one who proved that our legal
system was totally broken?
Let me tell you a little bit more about that case. The ladie's name was Stella Liebeck,
a grandmother from Albequerque. She received third-degree burns over 6% of her body, had
skin grafts, spent 8 days in the hospital, and it has been reported that she offered
to settle the case for just $20,000.
The company refused this outrageous demand, so the jury got to hear about dangerously
super-heated coffee and hundreds of other scalding-coffee claims.
For what it is worth, Mrs. Liebeck only received a fraction of the millions reported, so the
good news is our legal system isn't broken. The bad news is our way of reporting the truth
might be.
