My name is Elizabeth Fisher and I'm a mom of two.
BOARD [The Ontario Child Benefit helps low-income families with the cost of raising their children.]
Elizabeth Fisher: Justin is six years old and Chrissie is seventeen. Having children
is the hardest, but it's worth it. Being a single mom, you know, you want to be able
to provide for your kids. You want to give them the best. And at times, there's things
that you just really can't do.
BOARD [Currently more than 450,000 families receive monthly payments.]
Elizabeth Fisher: It's an orange and black pumpkin?
Justin Fisher: Yeah!
Elizabeth Fisher: That's pretty, I like that!
Elizabeth Fisher: Ontario Child Benefit, it's really important, just so we can be able to
do stuff. With all the gas prices kind of thing, and food is going up, the cost of food,
the cost of living, everything is going up. And, you know, the money helps out with it.
BOARD [Many parents can leave social assistance and work without losing their benefit.]
Elizabeth Fisher: Look at you. Look at how tiny you are. So tiny.
I volunteer with the Jane-Finch Community Centre. They've been a help to me. So, I want
to give back to what they've given to me.
SUPER [Andrea Lue Family support worker]
Andrea Lue: She's a very bubbly person. Very fun to be around. She has been in our program
for many years. And now she's like, actually here volunteering, and stepping on the other
side.
BOARD [The Poverty Reduction Strategy will increase the benefit, providing 1.3 million
children with up to $1,310 per year.]
Andrea Lue: In this community, I think one of the number one challenges that they face
would probably be poverty / isolation. Elizabeth has faced a lot of challenges. I can see that
she's really focused on her child and getting, sort of getting, what, what's best for him.
It helps them to provide new experiences for their children. And it also helps I think
with just the day-to-day living.
