This viewer asks, "I hear so much about CoQ10. What is it? And do I need it?" Well,CoQ10
or coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring molecule that is produced in the body, and also we
get out of some foods. Oily fish, like salmon and sardines. The covering of grains, we call
the germs of the grains, have some CoQ10 in it. If we eat a poor diet and we're under
more stress, we may not produce as much. But really what's important is coenzyme Q10 or
ubiquinone and also available as ubiquinol, which is a more direct-acting form, is important
to heart and to cells. It helps produce energy in the mitochondria. It helps control electrical
conductivity support proper electrical conductivity. So it is also depleted when people take statin
drugs to help lower their cholesterol. It can cause a, you know, a lessening of CoQ10
in the body, which then can affect the body accordingly. So, I personally recommend to
anybody that's taking statin drugs and that even includes naturally occurring statin-type
drugs like or supplements like reds yeast rice. Usually add I usually add 50 to up to
200 milligrams of CoQ10 a day and that's and that's really important. Obviously it's important
to get a good nourishing diet and to watch our stress levels, and this can be helpful.
And I also use CoQ for anybody who comes in to my office who has a heart irregularity
called an arrhythmia or has any kind of heart condition. It's probably a very one of the
more popular supplements in the in the country today. But, of course if you have any of these
issues, irregular heart or any kind of heart issues, see your doctor, and get checked out,
and let them also know what supplements you're taking or what they may recommend. And you
can see both your medical doctor and anybody who does nutritional medicine as well. So
those are some general ideas about Co CoQ10. It is an important nutrient. Some people may
benefit from it. And, again, talk to your doctor about what's right for you.
