Hello there!
Today, I'm talking about one of the most requested,
English video!
The most confusing English words!
So today, I will talk about the British English words I never heard before
Let's talk about English food words! The most confusing one was
In the States, we call desserts...desserts
Well I haven't heard the word 'dessert' here
They call it 'pudding'!
So at the beginning, people said 'let's have a pudding' and then had cakes
So I was like "Huh? Maybe they ran out of puddings'
But in British English, they call it pudding instead of dessert!(Differs in class, and place)
Also, British English has a lot of French words
For example, in the States this vegetable is called Eggplant
But in the UK it's called Aubergine
In the States, the Italian squash..
You know, it's dark green...
It's called Zucchini
In Korea, they call it Zucchini as well
But here(UK) they use the French word! Courgette!
In French, it is also called Courgette
and here, they spell it the same, and call it courgette
And also the famous one,
French Fries!
In the States, they call this French Fries or Fries
but in the UK they call it chips
So at first, it was very confusing
Because in the States, chips are..well, potato chips!
So that was pretty confusing
and then in the UK, they call the potato chips
Crisps!
You could accidentally spit! Crispssps
Nonetheless, there is one word I prefer over American English
And that's the restroom
Here, they call the restroom differently
In the States, when you're looking for a restroom
A public one would be
"Where is the restroom?" or for a private place
"Where is the bathroom?"
But if you ask like that here in the UK, some won't understand you
Here, they call it Loo!
Isn't it cute?
They call it either toilet, or loo!
In the states, toilet is basically...a toilet bowl
But here, they ask "Where is the toilet?" or, "where is the loo?"
So I love the word Loo!!!
I love to say "I'm going to the loo!" lol
And up next,
Apartment!
I think this will be a common word if you come here
In the States, they call this building, Apartment
Apt. if you want to abbreviate
But in the UK, I don't think I heard that word
Here they call it 'flat'!
Like you know..a flat thing lol
I don't know why
And the nest common word is elevator!
In the States, this is an elevator
I also called it elevator my whole life
But in British English, it's called 'lift'
Easier to pronounce!
And also, here's an extra information
In Korea and the States, the 1st floor...is 1st floor, and then 2nd etc
But in Europe, the 1st floor we know is Ground Floor
or 0! 0 floor
Then the following floor is the first floor, then the second, and so on
So if you visit here, don't get lost!
Up next, subway!
In the States, we call this subway
but here that word has another meaning
here they call it 'underground'
Or shorter, 'tube'
In Korea, truck is also called truck
This is American English
So in the States, you would call this truck
but in the UK, it's 'lorry'
LORRYLOORRRY that's how I say it!lol
The highway! In the States, you would call it highway or freeway
but in the UK it's called 'motorway'
I mean...MOTORWAY
In the States, they call the place with gasoline 'gas station' right
In the UK, they don't call it gas, nor gasoline
In British English it's called 'petrol'
So when I first heard Ollie say " I will go to get some petrol"
I was like "Wut?...Petroleum?"
And to wrap up, this is what we see in the streets as well
Trash/Garbage!
In the States, this is called trash
But in the UK, I haven't seen the word trash!
They call this 'rubbish'!
I mean, in America they do use the word rubbish
but more like an adjetive
Like "That's rubbish!"
but not the object, literal trash, you know?
That's.....all I have for today
These were the words I noticed when I arrived in England
I hope it helped
