This video shows how to perform a power test on your HP printer when it won’t turn on
or respond when you push the power button.
Make sure the electrical outlet you are using is functioning properly before performing
any additional steps.
Unplug the printer’s power cord from the outlet.
Test the outlet by plugging in another appliance to make sure the outlet is functioning properly.
Try turning the appliance on. If it does not turn on, you might have a malfunctioning outlet.
If the outlet is malfunctioning, test an alternative outlet by plugging in the appliance’s power
cord and then try turning it on.
If the appliance turns on, you know that the power outlet is working. Unplug the appliance’s
power cord and plug in the printer’s power cord into the same outlet.
Try turning the printer on. If the printer turns on, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the outlet does work, but the printer still does not turn on, continue to the next step.
In this step, you will make sure the power supply and printer are compatible. HP suggests
you use the original power supply that came with your printer.
Turn to the back of the printer.
Your power supply might include an internal or external power module depending on your
printer.
An internal power module is located inside your printer. If you have an internal power
module, you cannot verify compatibility because the module is built into the printer. We will
address how to reset this module in a few minutes.
An external power module is located on the power cord itself. Follow these steps to make
sure your power supply is compatible with the printer.
Voltage and amperage specifications can be found printed on the power module. Make sure
the specifications on the power module match the specifications listed on the back of the
printer or in the printer’s user guide.
If the voltage and the amperage specifications on the power module and the printer are the
same, they should be compatible.
Make sure the connector on the end of the power cord is the same shape and color as
the connector on the printer. If they are compatible, plug the connector back into your
printer.
If they are incompatible, do not force a power cord into the printer. This can damage your
printer.
If the power supply is not compatible with the printer, replace the power supply with
a compatible power cord or power module. Contact HP to find out what the support options are
for your printer.
If the power supply is compatible with your printer, make sure you have inserted the connector
into the printer and plugged the power cord into its power source.
Then, return to the front of the printer.
Press the power button.
If the printer turns on, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the power supply is compatible with the printer, but the printer still does not turn
on, continue to the next step.
In this step, you will reset the power module. The power module has a safety feature that
protects the printer during a power surge. If you have recently experienced a power surge,
the power module might need to be reset. Use the following steps to reset the power module.
Turn to the back.
Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
Then, disconnect the other end of the power cord from its power source.
If the printer has an external power module with a detachable power cord, disconnect the
cord from the power module.
Wait 15 seconds. It is important to wait the full 15 seconds for this type of reset.
If the printer has an external power module with a detachable power cord, reconnect the
cord to the power module.
Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet. Do not use a power strip or surge protector.
Then, reconnect the other end of the power cord into the printer.
If the external power module has an indicator light, make sure the light is on. If the indicator
light is off, then you likely need to replace the power module and cord. Contact HP to find
out what the support options are for your printer.
If the indicator light is on, or the power module does not have an indicator light, you
need to try powering on the printer again.
Return to the front.
Press and release the power button to start a power cycle. Do not hold the button down
or your printer might not power on.
If these steps resolved the issue and your printer powered on properly, you do not need
to continue troubleshooting. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.
If you have another available power supply that is compatible with your printer, perform
the previous steps again using the alternate power supply.
If the printer turns on with the alternate power supply, the original power supply was
the cause of the issue. Contact HP to find out what the support options are for your
printer.
If the printer does not turn on with the alternate power supply, continue to the next step.
