Greg: Hello and welcome to what I hope will be the first of many episodes of Greg talks,
a series in which I interview various celebrity guests about their
lives and careers, and maybe even ask some questions
submitted by you at home, the viewer. Anyway, let's get on with the show. My first guest
today shot to number seven in 1979 with her single Wuthering
Heights, a song based on the Charles Dickens poem of the
same name. Since then, she's garnered critical acclaim across the world, and maybe even in
other worlds as well, we don't know about that now do we.
Let's welcome her to the stage, ladies and gentlemen, it's Kate Bush!
Well Kate thank you for agreeing to be here today!
Kate: Well it's lovely to be here,
thank you so much for having me Greg: Anytime. We were quite surprised when
you agreed to come on, because you are renowned in the industry, you might say,
for shying away from the limelight? Kate: From the limelight, yeah. No well I'm
a big fan of your vlogs and I didn't want to miss the opportunity to be here.
It's lovely to be here, thank you so much for having me Greg: You've said that. Anyway, the logical
place to start would be with your music career, which began when you
were just 18, am I correct? Kate: Just 18, yeah. Well what happened was
I was singing one day because I like to sing you see and then I was
reading Wuthering Heights and I realised if I took some of the words and sang them it
could make a song which people might like so I did and people
did like it Greg: Well quite, I mean, it is your best-selling
single, so really you could say that you've been getting gradually
worse since 1978 Kate: Since 1978, no yeah, well I mean you
could say that but also that's the oldest one so it's had more time to sell
copies so really my others might be as good just no-one ever really considers that do
they. Greg: A fair point indeed. Anyway, speaking
of the Olympics, you recorded a new version of Running Up That Hill
(A Deal With God) which featured in the closing ceremony. Did you not fancy making an appearance
and singing the song yourself?
Kate: Well no yeah I mean the problem is I haven't aged from around 1984 so if I do appear
in public people get scared, but I should be okay doing this appearance
because no-one is going to watch it and I mean it's so
lovely to be here I don't really mind Greg: Yes, you have said. Anyway, you are
known in many ways for the numerous unique qualities you possess,
one of which is your unorthodox dancing technique. Could you talk us through what you do when
you dance for your videos, particularly Wuthering Heights
as that's probably the only one the majority of people
watching will have seen. Kate: Will have seen yeah. No I mean what
I do when I dance, I pretend that I'm a cat but a cat that's been
unexpectedly turned into a human, and the cat isn't sure how to work the body and also
he's very scared of his hands because cats don't have hands they
have paws and paws and hands are quite different things, you
know? Greg: Right. Could you possibly give us an
example of this? Kate: Yeah sure, I mean all you do is just
Greg: Wonderful, quite wonderful. It isn't just your dancing which is unusual, however.
Your singing has gained a reputation of sorts for its very erm unique
style. Kate: Unique style yeah. Well no I mean what
I do is I sing in a sort of high pitch but then I drop it low for no
apparent reason and it just works Greg: Indeed, well speaking of your singing,
we have a very short extract here from your new single, which is
out...? Kate: Is out yeah
Greg: Let's take a look Greg: Well that looks wonderful, and I cannot
wait. Kate, thank you so much for joining us
Kate: It's been lovely to be here yeah Greg: Kate Bush, ladies and Gentlemen. Well
that's all we have time for this week, join me next time when my
guest will be none other than Professor Snape himself, Mr Alan Rickman will be here! Until
the next time! Bye!
