My name is Khrystyna and I am a Harper graduate.
So I'm originally from the Ukraine and uh...I grew up there.
I came here when I was fifteen.
And uh... the leaving part was hard.
Leaving our family and everything behind and starting over
and learning a language
It was very challenging the first couple years.
getting used to the new environment.
But then within the two years of me being here I knew that I
wanted something better
and to have a higher education.
So when I graduated high school I choose Harper because
it was affordable for
me and for my family.
I knew that I could get the credits and transfer to any university that
I would like to.
I got my General Ed courses done, transferred to Northeastern
and got my bachelors in accounting came back to get extra credits at Harper
because I decided to go for the CPA.
And Harper was a great choice for me because it was flexible and I could get
the credits that I needed
and the timeframe that I wanted to
and now I'm
waiting to start my CPA.
So I took Psych 106 after I graduated Northeastern and came
back to get more credits.
I decided that I was going to have an open mind about classes and take classes
that were a little bit out of my comfort zone and so I...
Psych 106 just looked interesting to me and so
the first day of class when we met the professor,
Miss Mariam, she was amazing and I thought this is going to be blast
of a class. So we
covered different things that affect our learning from
um... some technical psychology terms like motivation
and...cognition and how our brains are affected by different things but the
professor, she would encourage us to think of our personal choices so we would have
different exercises in class where she would want us to think of
something that affects us personally like what motivates you or we talked about flow a lot
finding flow and learning and
and living and working and so she
wanted us to step back
from ourselves and kind of look at ourselves in the mirror and um...
I don't know, dissect how we think and how we learn
because they don't always think about that
as people.
I worked hard
and I was able to
have my education done and also start a family. I got married and I had
a daughter and I did all of that while going to school full time
and uh...
I was...
After I graduated I just looked back and I was so proud of
being a woman and representing and showing that you can, that you can
do it all.
I mattered at Harper College.
