"The energy says we're starting somewhere way up here, somewhere high in energy." Often
times students will come in and say they hated chemistry in high school. 90% of the time,
the student says "I hated my teacher, my teacher was terrible" which has nothing to do with
liking or not liking chemistry, so it's a real challenge trying to take that student
and change them into somebody or give them the opportunity to change themselves into
someone that appreciates the science. "We've got the structure of CO2, what is that conversion."
"I knew Professor H from when I TA'd for him in Chemistry, he's very approachable with
the students." "I thought somebody was raising their hand over there, they were just patting
their friend on the head." "I think he understand that students who come into the intro chem
program here come from different backgrounds. Some students have taken AP Chem, for some
this is there first class. I think he really tries to design the lectures in a way thats
really supportive to those taking chemistry for the first time, but then with supplementary
homework problems or workshop problems he really tries to challenge his students, all
of them." "So how would you go about doing that?" "Well I took the grams of the product,
add it up and pray to god its the same amount of grams. "Right, right, exactly, I think
the praying is a really good part of that." "Good afternoon, I'm Dr. Hafensteiner, and
I'll be your professor for Chemistry 131." "So the prank was for our college radio show
the Chamber Boys, when we approached Dr. H, we said we wanted 5 minutes to do whatever
we wanted to do, he said 'Oh it's fine, whatever you do I can fix.'" "One thing you should
know about this class, this class is extremely hard..." "Patrick played an unbelieveable
me, well a very believeable me I guess. He was there for the first three minutes or so
of class, then I came in and kicked him out." "Who the hell are you?" "I can't believe that
its, I checked yesterday and its something like 8.6 million hits on that video." "Okay
so that guy is not Dr. H, I'm Dr. H." "When I came in i was able to set the record straight
and tell people, look this class is structured so that you can succeed, and there's nothing
about this class that's structured in a way that's going to force you to fail." "If you
have your clicker, take it out." "If I'm taking a class from anybody that's bored, I'm going
to be bored. The only way for me to stay interested is to continuously refresh things, and that
doesn't mean just notes, it also means things like i-clickers, I brought i-clickers into
the class, which allow students to actually answer questions, not on a 1 by 1 basis, and
we can get numbers and I can show abr graphs of who thinks its a and who thinks its b."
"That tells me that probably only a quarter of the people who are here got the right actual
answer, so let's look at where you can run into trouble in solving this problem." "The
best barometer for me of seeing whether or not students are understanding what I'm bringing
to them is Office Hours." "Once your comfortable with these pieces going into the ionic form..."They
have a question about something that I talked about in lecture and we straighten that question
out and bring a general sense of understanding to the topic that they're working on." "Once
you have that molar value, you can calculate how many grams it was..." "I love being able
to help people, which is really why I love the teaching because I'm able to help people
on a daily basis, and help a lot of people if I'm doing my job well." A production of
